INDEPENDENCE 31 MESSAGE BY DR. TERRANCE DREW

By: Dr. Terrance Drew, Commentary
BASSETERRE, ST.KITTS- (Friday 19th September, 2014) - Kittitians and Nevisians, we are undoubtedly some of the most patriotic people in the world.

Each year during our Independence anniversary celebration our nationalistic pride comes alive with much enthusiasm.

Whether it is in our choice of outfits, hairstyles or other loyal statements, we publicly show how proud we are to be citizens of this twin- island sovereign nation.

I see flags flying in the sweet breeze as you drive your vehicles, I see flags decorated about your homes, I see your umbrellas, your bandannas and other patriotic items and I think to myself there goes a proud St.Kitts-Nevis national.

It is not only on the occasion of our Independence anniversary that we express pride in our nationality.

Notably, however, the celebrative atmosphere, togetherness and patriotic pride showcased during this time of year is quite inspiring. Hence, it goes without saying that demonstrating that we are Kittitians and Nevisians is an important part of our identity as a people; acknowledging our steps forward as a self-governing Federation.

Many of our fellow nationals living abroad year after year, of course, join in the celebration too.

As one who has spent many years abroad pursuing my academic studies, I can testify that celebrating Independence while overseas fuels love for one’s country and strengthens one’s feeling of belonging to such a blessed land of beauty.

This year's Independence 31 theme: ‘A Nation on the move, celebrating Our Progress’ beautifully encapsulates our milestones and achievements as well as our positive outlook as an independent nation.

I applaud the genuine efforts we make in exhibiting our national identity because love for one's country, specifically in our case here in St.Kitts and Nevis, is a special type of attitude which gives life and significance to our motto: ‘Country Above Self.'

I wish to use this opportunity to issue a challenge to us all, and that is to  let our patriotic pride which gives off  such a special glow at Independence be a consistent part of our daily lives. Let that candle of love for our nation burn brightly on the path towards further advancement for our nation.

A country's best and greatest resource is its people. Consequently, we all have the potential and power to collectively add to the progress to our nation's growth and development for the betterment of us all.

Individually, let us think positively about progress, and hand in hand let us get the job done because our present day situation and future generations are depending on us.

Let us not forget the hard work of our National Heroes- who we salute annually on September 16th—as our recognised nation builders who have helped to shape the social, economic and political landscape of St.Kitts and Nevis.

The Rt Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Hon. Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell and The Rt. Excellent Sir Simeon Daniel have collectively personified  ‘Country Above Self’ as they have shown the benefits of planting seeds of  hard work and good will motivated by selflessness and patriotic zest that blossom into fruits of progress.

We must aspire to follow in the footsteps of our fallen stalwarts.

We must remember, also, our everyday heroes such as our teachers, cleaners, doctors and nurses who are working hard every day for the betterment of our society and nation on a whole.

    HAPPY 31st INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY ST.KITTS-NEVIS
