Press Release

CASTRIES, St Lucia (September 22, 2014) – At a time when most Saint Lucians are reeling from high food prices, few jobs and rampant criminal activities on the island, the Lucian People’s Movement (LPM) has called upon the government to end its diversionary political warfare in the Guy Joseph affair.

After more than two years, there has yet to be an arrest or even a single charge laid against Guy Joseph for allegations of corruption during his term as the island’s Minister of Communications and Works (2006–2011). The time has come for the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) to unburden the people of Saint Lucia and put an end to what is seemingly a game of politics as usual.

The LPM states that in most countries around the world in which governments are serious about rooting out corruption, they do not resort to political slander or campaigns in the guise of accountability to shame the accused without any due process. Moreover, in a democracy in which a government is compelled and duty bound to protect its citizens from criminal acts committed by government officials and their cronies, it must invoke the arm of the law to deal with such matters.

Therefore, in light of the government’s failure to do so, the LPM further states that it should be very clear to all the people of Saint Lucia by now that Dr Anthony and his government have no intention of seeking to prove their case in a criminal court of law.

The intention of the government, the LPM contends, is to use the safe haven of Saint Lucia’s “Honourable” House of Assembly to distract the attention of the public from its ongoing dismal performance as a party that was supposed to provide a better quality of life for the citizens of the country.

The LPM consequently calls upon Dr Anthony and his government to level with the people of Saint Lucia by affording Guy Joseph the appropriate legal setting to defend his name and character from what is evidently a vicious and protracted political campaign.

The LPM also invites members of the public to have their say by participating in the ongoing online poll, on http://www.lpmstlucia.com/ to the following question: In the absence of no criminal charges against Guy Joseph after more than two years of relentless personal attacks, do you believe that the SLP government has any credibility left on this issue?
