    Monday, September 22, 2014 - The Government of the Virgin Islands is pleased to announce the names of members of the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee who will investigate the working conditions of various professions and make recommendations on the minimum basic wage that should be paid.  The Committee members are:

     


    1.    Chairman, Mr. Simon Potter
     
    2.    Vice chairman, Mrs. Benedicta Samuels-Richardson
     
    3.    Representative of shops and stores, Mr. Roger Mathavious, Jr.
     
    4.    Representative of Hotel and Commerce Association, Mr. Louis Potter
     
    5.    Representative of  Restaurants, Mr. Wilbert Mason
     
    6.    Representative of Restaurants, Mr. Mario Smith
     
    7.    Representative of Building Industry, Mrs. Roxanne Ritter-Herbert
     
    8.    Representative of Workers, Mrs. Jeanette Black
     
    9.    Representative of Workers, Mr. Wilbert Smith
     
    10. Representative of Sister Islands, Ms. Anne Lennard
     
    11. Youth representative, Mr. Aaron Parillon
     
    12. Youth representative, Mr. Bevin George
     
    13. President/representative of the Virgin Islands Christian Council
     
    14. Representative of Development Planning Unit Raymond Phillips
     
    15. Financial Secretary/ representative (Advisory)
     
    16. Labour Commissioner/representative (Advisory)
     
    17.  Secretary, ex-officio Member from the Labour Department

    The committee was formed in accordance with the Virgin Islands Labour Code 2010 Part 3, Section 38 (1)(e) and has been approved by Cabinet.

    Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering commended the Labour Department last week for remaining steadfast and committed to ensuring that progress was made in addressing concerns about the minimum basic wage in the Territory.

     “I know that many persons have inquired, sighting their concerns for the review of the minimum wage in the Virgin Islands and we are more than happy to announce our progress concerning this vital part of our economy and our work as a Government,” Honourable Pickering said at the time.

    He also pointed out that Government is committed to ensuring that workers are remunerated in a manner that is commensurate with the current economic climate.

    The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour strives to ensure that the supply of labour is commensurate with the level of development in all sectors of the economy.
