PM Hails Overwhelming Display of Nationalistic Pride

PM Douglas interacts with students during Ministers’ Visits to School
Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 24, 2014 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas has expressed overall satisfaction with the Independence 31 activities saying that the public’s zeal and participation has been most pleasing to see.

Activities such as the State Service at the Wesley Methodist Church, National Colours Day, the Wreath Laying and Guard of Honour at the Robert L. Bradshaw Memorial Park and the Civil Service Fun Day were well supported. The Prime Minister also highlighted two other events that captured the spirit of nationals.

“The participation has been quite enthusiastic,” stated PM Douglas. “From the visits to the schools and seeing the excitement of the children to what I saw at Warner Park for the parade under the full glory of the lights, the packed stands and the reception to the Independence address. Everything was very much people-oriented and to a large extent first class.”

Credit was given to the subcommittee members of the Ceremonial Parade who recommended staging the event under the lights, on the eve of the anniversary and to have it roll over to Independence Day on September 19. This marked the first time since the original ceremony in 1983 that this was done.

“The preparation that went into that event was remarkable,” noted the Prime Minister. “The assessment of the nationalism among our people was correct because people came out in such numbers for the parade that we have never, ever had before.”

Much like he did on that night, Prime Minister Douglas said there was “much to celebrate over the 31 years of nationhood in St. Kitts and Nevis and said “the public’s response confidently reinforces that.”

Independence activities conclude over the next few days with a Street Market this Friday and Saturday (September 26 and 27) at the Circus. Saturday’s staging will include a free concert featuring top local acts including Infamus and the NuVybes Band as well as regional stars Busy Signal and Queen Ifrica.

A Primary School Effective Speaking Competition is also scheduled for next Monday (September 29).
