BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING the shooting incident which occurred within the Joseph N. France General Hospital a couple of days ago, Health Minister the Hon. Marcella Liburd has informed the nation that measures are being taken to beef up security there.

On Monday (Sept. 22) evening while Kaheel Herbert of Thibou Avenue was at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department of the JNF, he was attacked by two gunmen and shot multiple times. After several hours of surgery, Herbert was warded at the Hospital but succumbed to his injuries sometime yesterday.

Minister Liburd has extended condolences to Herbert’s family and informed that among the security upgrades to take place at the hospital is the installation of security cameras.

“The Ministry wishes to assure the JNF Hospital staff, all health workers and the general public that we will work closely with the security forces to ensure that this heinous act does not happen again. With immediate effect, we have increased the presence of the security forces at the Hospital on a 24-hour basis, security cameras will be installed, and the visiting policy would be strictly adhered to. Other security measures would be put in place in the short and medium term.”

The Health Minister said the incident was a “dastardly act” but indicated that it would not “discourage us from continuing to provide quality health care to residents and visitors alike”.

She said both staff and patients were traumatised by this “wanton act of violence” but reassured “that the measures put in place would create a safer environment for all healthcare providers and those who access care at or visit he Joseph N France General Hospital.

“The Ministry wishes to thank the entire Hospital Staff for continuing to function at a high level under the circumstances. We also wish to thank the security forces for their continued support and the general public for their understanding and cooperation.”
