Ellia granted bail

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ELLIA JEFFERS, who was charged with a number of cocaine-related offences, was granted bail on Friday (Sept. 26).

     

    She appeared at the District A Magistrate’s Court before Her Worship Josephine Mallelieu-Webbe for the bail hearing and at the end of it, she was released on bail in the amount of $50,000 with two sureties.

     

    Her defence counsel Chesley Hamilton told SKNVibes that as conditions of her bail, Jeffers is required to report to the Basseterre Police Station every Friday between the hours of 6:00a.m. and 6:00p.m. and she was required to surrender her travel documents.

     

    Jeffers was arrested earlier in the month (Sept. 6) after she allegedly smuggled a quantity of cocaine into the Federation via the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, having returned from St. Maarten.

     

    A police press release informed that “the keen observation and quick thinking by Customs Officers of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department” led “to a collaborative investigation with the police which (led) to the discovery and seizure of just over a half a kilogram of cocaine”.

     

    As a result of the find, Jeffers was charged by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force with importation of cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to supply. She was additionally charged by Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department with importation, possession of restricted goods, signing an untrue declaration and making an untrue statement to a Customs Officer.

     

    She was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison after being charged.
