Hon. Eugene Hamilton reiterates commitment to Comprehensive Health Insurance for ALL under Team UNITY government

Press Release (TUCOM)

Basseterre, St.Kitts (Team UNITY Communications):-Hon. Eugene Hamilton Team UNITY Candidate and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8 has has reiterated his commitment to the introduction of Universal Healthcare or Health Insurance for all .

In 1992 Hon. Hamilton designed and lobbied for the introduction of Universal Health coverage to Public Servants in St.Kitts Nevis. The coverage was introduced and St.Kitts Nevis became one of the earliest East Caribbean Nations to embrace Universal Health coverage for Public Servants. The revolutionary Health Insurance Scheme provided coverage for local care and extended coverage for procedures at regional and extra regional providers, including major medical coverage. Every public servant from the Governor General to the lowest paid employee on the government’s payroll was included.

As party of the new UNITY Government’s Prosperity Agenda Hon. Hamilton will spearhead an immediate implementation of a Comprehensive Health Insurance program. The Team UNITY Parliamentarian proposes a partnership between the private and public sectors so that all of our residents including children, the unemployed, and persons with pre-existing conditions would be covered in the event that they become ill and incur major expenses for treatment at home or abroad.

The idea of Comprehensive Health Insurance for all is not only bold and imaginative, but in these challenging times for families who from time to time have to decide between food, school books, and medicine, it is a necessity.

Hamilton explains that he embraces the concept of Private Sector Health programs for individuals and groups. “The intention of this Health Insurance Scheme I am advocating is not to replace Private Sector Health Insurance, but to ensure that every resident had access to a reasonable measure of protection if faced with a medical need.”

It was during the election campaign of 2004 that the Hon. Eugene Hamilton first outlined a plan to provide Comprehensive Health Insurance coverage so that all residents would be guaranteed coverage in the event of major medicals, including costly overseas procedures.

“It is my view that decision makers in our nation should give the highest priority to the health of our
nation's people,” says the Hon. Eugene Hamilton.

“This Team UNITY has Vision and Imagination….It is Vision and Imagination when we say to you under a UNITY Government that never again in this country will anyone suffer because they become ill and don’t have the money," said Hamilton
Hamilton often gives the story of one of his constituents Livingstone Griffin who after despite having a successful operation in Trinidad died because he could not afford the post surgey treatment that was necessary to keep him alive.

“There was a man from Keys by the name of Livingstone Griffin, I always remember him, who had an operation here and cut part of his intestines….a very successful operation….came out and was walking up and down the place. But then he was told he had to go to Trinidad for 20 cycles of chemotherapy. The young man didn’t have it so he went around with a piece of paper begging for contributions. Many people watched him and didn’t give a contribution and he eventually died. A young man in his 30’s. I say Never Again will anyone suffer and die like that without an opportunity to get treatment in this country under a Team UNITY Government.”
Under the Team unity universal Healthcare insurance every citizen
