Man rescued from burning building

Haynes Smith Village house from which a man was rescued

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man had to be pulled from his Haynes Smith Village home over the weekend after it caught fire. And while there is a suspected cause of the blaze, it is still unknown.

The property – according to Acting Fire Chief Everette O’Garro – is a one storey wooden and concrete structure which housed two families.

A family of four occupies one of the spaces there and a man identified as Rudolph Woodley occupied the other.

The Fire Chief further indicated that sometime during Sunday afternoon (Sept. 28), Woodley left his friends and headed home, declaring that he was going to cook. And at about 5:30p.m., smoke was seen billowing into the air and it was discovered that his house was on fire.

SKNVibes understands that his friends braved the flames, entered the house and retrieved him therefrom. He reportedly suffered burns to the lower parts of his body however, the degree of the burns is unknown.

He was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment.

The Fire Chief (Ag) said the blaze was contained and extinguished within 20 to 30 minutes but that portion of the house was destroyed.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown although it is suspected that Woodley was cooking and may have fallen asleep during the process.

“We want to remind people of how unsafe it is to leave cooking unattended. It is a very unsafe practice to begin cooking and then proceed to bed and eventually fall asleep. We are urging individuals not to do this because it can lead to fires which can destroy property and there is also the risk of lives being lost”, O’Garro expressed.

Meanwhile, a house located in Challengers – which was occupied by Emile Powell – was completely gutted by fire on Saturday (Sept. 27).

O’Garro told SKNVibes that the Fire Department responded to a report at about 12:30p.m. and when they arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames. After about an hour’s time, the fire was totally quenched but all the contents of the house were totally consumed.

He said however that the unit was able to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding houses.

Powell was reportedly not home when during the fire and the Fire Chief (Ag) said the origin of the fire is unknown.
