Patches labels PM Douglas a "compulsive liar"

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TEAM UNITY Candidate for Constituency Number One, Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd is insistent that the decision to forgive consumers of Electricity debt was hijacked by Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas and has labelled him a "compulsive liar".

After the Prime Minister’s announcement for the writing off of debt to the St. Kitts Electricity Department (SKED) up to July 31, 2011, Liburd and Team Unity accused him of plagiarising their idea. The Prime Minister retorted indicating that the idea emanated from his Cabinet and was stolen by Unity members the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris and the Hon. Sam Condor while they were a part of his Cabinet.

In an exclusive interview with this publication however, Liburd maintained his claim that the idea was originally his and was stolen by the Prime Minister.

Liburd explained that Dr. Douglas’ announcement of an arranged payment structure for persons in arrears to SKED – now the St. Kitts the St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd (SKELEC) – proves that the he stole the idea

“It is obvious that is a lie. His own former Cabinet colleagues denied that and you yourself could work it out when sometime last year they announced that they would put the delinquent customers on a payment plan. He said those who owed before 2011 would have three years to pay off the debt.”

He also stated that if the idea were indeed hatched from Dr. Douglas’ Cabinet it meant that the Prime Minister was placing “unnecessary financial burden” on consumers with the 2013 announcement.

“The fact that last year just before Labour Day he announced that those who were in arrears ‘they can’t cut you off’ and pay the arrears over a three-year-period, which means he gives them up to 2015 to pay. So to come back now and say the Cabinet had decided that, it means he was putting the people under unnecessary financial burden if he had that idea.

“It is a clear move of deception. Dr. Douglas found himself losing the race and actually plagiarized our ideas, he stole our idea. He never really understand what we say we were going to do.”

“In politics, words matter especially when you’re stealing from someone else and get caught red-handed and he was caught red-handed stealing our ideas and I am happy that the press and the media is looking at it because it is scandalous.

Liburd said the act was one of desperation by the Government, in an effort to maintain the reins of power.

“What has happened is Dr. Douglas is trying to keep his beleaguered government in office, so he is desperate. He is promising all sorts of things and dishing out goodies…now he has been caught red-handed stealing the blueprint of Team Unity’s Prosperity Agenda.”

Liburd also indicated that Dr. Douglas seems not to quite understand in its entirety, Team Unity’s plan of relief.

“He does not understand what we were saying because we were not just going to reward those who had arrears on their electricity bills; we were also going to reward those who paid religiously over the years and kept themselves current, but we had not really gone into details or he might have stolen that as well.

“He has been found stealing our idea and rewarding delinquency. Our idea is not just to reward delinquency but also reward diligence. He has failed the test and he has been found to be a compulsive liar and where you find a liar you find a scamp.”

On April 4, 2013 while at a political meeting at St. Paul’s, Prime Minister Douglas announced that payment measures were to be put in place for those owing SKED.

“We made sure that the electricity was improved. We know that the rates are still very high, but we say we gone bring it down and I want to use this opportunity tonight to tell you the arrears which you had on your electricity bill, before August 2011, those arears had been put aside for you to pay over three years.”

Shortly after that announcement, Liburd disclosed his alternative of wiping off the entire debt.
