Breast Cancer Awareness activities get underway

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AN obvious change has taken place at The Circus, where the green and gold paint that decorates ‘The Clock’ has been accentuated by the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation with pink ribbons as a vivid reminder of the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The world over, October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a number of activities have been planned for the local observance.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, Pamela Armstrong of the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation highlighted some of the major activities which the group has organised.

“We actually started a little early this year. We started Saturday at the Street Market. We had the ‘New to Used Sale’ which was a huge success. Sunday (Oct. 5) is our official opening at the Antioch Baptist. On Monday we were to have an annul event that we started five years ago called ‘Ask The Doctor’ where the Federation calls in on radio and questions the doctors pertaining to breast cancer but that had been postponed to a later date.

“On October 7, we have Bingo night at PJ’s in Frigate. Then each and every Friday starting this Friday is wear pink Friday. So we are asking the Federation to wear pink each and every Friday.

“Then on October 17 we are having a candle light vigil at the back of the Old Treasury where we would be remembering all the loved ones that have passed because of Breast Cancer and showing our support for the survivors... Then on the 22nd, we are having a ‘Ride the Bull’ challenge at The Bar in the Sugars Complex. The finale at the end of October is the walk-a-thon from Caribbean Cinemas to the pasture in Frigate Bay from 6:00 a.m.”

She added that the month-long celebration would climax on November 1, with a Pink Carpet Gala at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

Armstrong was keen on explaining why Breast Cancer Awareness Month is important to the foundation which she serves.

“It is very important, because October is the only time people take breast cancer awareness seriously and take some time and listen to how important it is to learn that facts about breast cancer. We get the Federation on board and everybody seems to open their hearts towards this so it is important to us.”

She also urged the public to become an advocate for breast cancer.

“I would also like to encourage anyone who would like to come on board and be a sponsor or a partner, advocate or join our Foundation. We welcome everyone and we just want the public to know we are here and doing great and every year we get bigger and stronger.”
