Press Release

Thursday, October 2, 2014 - Professional development sessions have been instituted for the staff at the Jost Van Dyke School as part of efforts to improve the academic performance of students.

The sessions were introduced by newly appointed Principal Mrs. Laverne D. Blyden who said strengthening the academic performance of students is top on her priority list.

“It begins with my teachers, so what we have started is a professional in-house training for these educators.”  Mrs Blyden outlined.

She added. “They have identified areas where students require additional assistance, and we have begun to develop strategies, ways and means to assist the students.”

Principal Blyden disclosed that the implementation of a “Healthy Lifestyles Programme” is another priority area to be undertaken this year.  She revealed that the school has served as a pilot school for this in the past and she would like to see it continued.  The hosting of a fruit week and a smoothie day are also part of activities planned for the school year.

Ms. Blyden pointed out that plans are in place to have a renewed focus on cultural initiatives and the performing arts at the school.  The new principal described her first weeks in the post as exciting and interesting and that she plans to mobilize the community more as they already have an active presence at the school.

The principal said she has a wonderful complement of staff, parents who visit the school on a daily basis and students who are excited and ready to learn..

The theme for this year at the Jost Van Dyke School is ‘TEAM – Together Each Achieve Much.’

The Ministry of Education and Culture supports the Territory’s Principals as it continues to create a Culture of Excellence.
