Press Release

Friday, October 3 – The BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) and Government of the Virgin Islands continue to affirm a combined vision for an enhanced cruise tourism product with the BVI Cruise Pier Expansion Project.

In pursuing that vision, a delegation will showcase BVI at the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association’s Cruise Conference & Trade Show in St. Maarten from October 6 - 10.

The FCCA was founded in 1972, as a not-for-profit trade organisation composed of 15 member cruise lines operating more than 100 vessels in Floridian, Caribbean and Latin American waters.

As stated on its website, FCCA’s mandate is “to provide a forum for discussion on tourism development, ports, safety, security and other cruise industry issues”. This year’s conference may see over 1,000 cruise line executives and stakeholders.

Commenting on the conference, Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority Mr. Claude Skelton Cline said, “The Authority looks forward to representing the BVI every year at this very important conference. We are especially keen on spreading the word on our much anticipated, game-changing cruise pier expansion and landside development.”

“We’re especially looking forward to our one-on-one meetings with various cruise line representatives who would provide insight on their customers and their own expectations of BVI,” he added.

The managing director said he is looking forward to a good 2014/ 2015 cruise season and highlighted the new cruise pier is expected to be completed by Spring 2015.

As for the landside development, Mr. Skelton Cline said Tortola Pier Park should be at substantive completion by next April.

With regards to the upcoming season, Mr. Skelton Cline said there were some cancellations and explained, “To date, there are five berths of Royal Caribbean that are cancelled during the period October to December 2014. The cancellations were as a result of the cruise lines not opting to anchor in Road Harbour and have guests tendered into shore.”

The managing director added, “The Authority understands the cruise line’s position and looks forward to furthering its relations with all cruise lines for the season that is upon us. As an incentive, the Authority is absorbing costs associated with the tendering service.”

In addition to the tendering service, the BVIPA is also acquiring golf carts to transport the elderly and/or differently abled passengers from the arrival point to taxis/ tour operators at no additional cost to cruise lines/ passengers for the entire period the pier won’t be operational. Both sides of the pier are undergoing construction and will not be operational until January 2015.

Mr. Skelton Cline is part of a delegation comprised of government officials from the Ministry of Communications and Works, BVI Tourist Board and other representatives of the BVIPA.

BVI Ports Authority’s representation at the FCCA conference is in line with promoting the BVI’s new cruise pier development coming on stream in 2015. The development involves the lengthening, widening and strengthening of the cruise pier, along with landside development to accommodate commercial, retail, entertainment and green spaces.
