BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOUR players from the Federation – three from St. Kitts and one from Nevis – have been selected to represent a Leeward Islands team for the inaugural West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Professional Cricket League starting in November, 2014.

Former West Indies batsman Kieran Powell, former Leeward Islands Captain Steve Liburd, former Leeward Islands U-19 Captain Jeremiah Louis and St. Kitts Captain Jacques Taylor were all announced as part of the Leeward Islands team, according to the WICB’s website.

The WICB informs that the six franchises were to retain 10 players and were to draft an additional five players to make up a squad of 15.

Powell, Louis and Liburd were selected as part of the 10 retained by the Leeward Islands while Taylor was selected in the fourth round of the draft.

Powell, 24 a veteran of 21 test matches, averages 27.48 runs per innings for the West Indies and captained the Leeward Islands in the last WICB Regional Tournament.

Twenty-nine-year-old Liburd, a batsman, was a former Captain of the Leeward Islands and had played in 35 First Class games with an average of 20.78 with one 100 and four 50s.

Taylor, 26, an all-rounder and the current St. Kitts Cricket Team Captain, has played six first class games for the Leeward Islands, scoring 143 runs at an average of 20.42 while also collecting four wickets.

Louis, 18, has yet to represent the Senior Leeward Islands Team but captained the U-19 team earlier this year.

One notable omission from the Leeward Island Squad is Tonito Willet.

According to a WICB release, each of the six franchise teams will have a unique name. The Windward Islands franchise will be known as Volcanoes while the Trinidad and Tobago franchise will be known as Red Force. The other four franchises have yet to announce their names.

The six franchises participated in the Player Draft today (Oct 6) through a selection panel consisting of the Chairman of Selectors and Head Coach.

The ten players retained by the Leeward Islands are; Quinton Boatswain, Jahmar Hamilton, Montcin Hodge, Yannick Leonard, Steve Liburd, Jeremiah Louis, Kieran Powell, Devon Thomas, Hayden Walsh and Kelbert Walters.

And the five drafted are; Anthony Martin, Gavin Tonge, Rahkeem Cornwall, Jacques Taylor and Lyndel Richardson.
