Press Release

Tuesday, October 7, 2014 - The Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies will be officially opened next Tuesday. This is keeping with the Government of the Virgin Islands commitment to the educational development of the youth of this Territory.

The ceremony will take place on the school grounds in Baugher’s Bay at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on ZBVI 780 AM. It will also be available on www.zbviradio.com.

According to the Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, the Government of the Virgin Islands recognises the need to provide equal educational opportunities for all citizens, especially its youth and to build capacity towards sustainable development.

“With the rapid development of the Territory, there is a constant need for labour. With the scarcity of local expertise, attention to technical and vocational education and training has become a priority.” The Minister stated.

Acting Principal for the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies, Ms. Germaine Scatliffe outlined that the Technical high School is designed with an awareness of the holistic and functional needs of students who are interested in developing skills that will enable them to pursue trades and become productive citizens.

“This school is structured to enable students to achieve higher levels of proficiency in Technical and Vocational Education areas and the option to obtain general secondary education certification,” Ms. Scatliffe also added.

Speakers for the opening ceremony will include Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE, Minister of Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Dr. Marcia Potter, and Acting Principal for the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies, Ms. Germaine Scatliffe.

As a part of the official opening ceremony, the second wing of the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies will be named after former technical educator, the late Mr. Stanley Nibbs.

The Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies empowers its students, affords them new possibilities, and also gives students the freedom to choose.
