BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CUSTOMERS of the St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd. (SKELEC) who would have recently received bills which do not reflect the debt forgiveness herald by the Prime Minister last month, have been offered an explanation as to why the reduction/forgiveness has not yet been reflected.

On the eve of Independence (Sept. 18), during the annual parade, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas announced that all households owing arrears to the electricity company prior to August 1, 2011, would have their debts forgiven effective immediately.

Yesterday (Oct. 7) while speaking at the launch of the Light Exchange and Distribution (LED) project, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy the Hon. Asim Martin explained that the bills might not yet reflect the debt forgiveness because the process of printing the bills had already begun when the announcement was made.

“I want to say that some of you might have gotten a bill already and on that bill, you would have probably seen...the SKED arrears… The reason why you continue to see the SKED arrears is that the exact time when the Prime Minister made the announcement, the bills were already in progress and that is why you would see that reflection in the bills that would be out during this month…”

Dr. Martin indicated however that the debt-forgiveness would be reflected in the upcoming billing cycle.

“But I want to say to the customers of all households that effective your bill for the month coming, October, you will see no SKED arrears on that bill and that is what the government and the Prime Minister would have said on the night of the 18th of September.”

The Prime Minister was commended by his Deputy for bringing “a tremendous amount of relief to the people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis”.
