BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE year after his remains were found a few hundred feet from his home, the death of nine-year-old Kadeem Periera continues to be a mystery to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.

Speaking on Freedom FM’s Good Morning St. Kitts-Nevis programme today (Oct. 9), Commissioner of Police Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn said the matter continues to baffle the investigators.

“That is a case that has mystified us…We had the pathologist locally and the one from Barbados to do the exams and it was ruled inconclusive as to the cause of death. The things that we would look for are like choking, broken bones all that stuff and we didn’t see any evidence of that. We had the records reviewed by the FBI and they too came up with an analysis of how they thought he died but there was nothing to indicate that he was murdered. So it’s a mystery right now.”

He stated that they however are investigating theories that could have led to Pereira’s death.

“We have theories…but we cannot arrest anybody and charge them based on a theory. So we have to continue the investigation in the hope that we can prove our theories before an arrest is made. It is still a very active investigation. We have to continue the investigation in the hope we can prove our theories.”

He also stated that he has been in touch with some of Pereira’s family members.

“One of the family members called me last week but we don’t have anything new other than what we have already told them. I empathise on how they feel. I have been doing this job for a long time and it bothers me because this was a little child. He was nine years old, the day we found him he turned 10.”

Pereira, went missing on Saturday October 5, 2013 and a massive search for him was launched on the following night by police officers and was discovered on October 7, 2013.

“The officers were joined by the K-9 Unit of the Island Constables Division of Ross University of Veterinary Medicine along with Prego, the police dog, but it was not until two days after that the child’s decomposing body was found just a few hundred feet from his home.”
