St. Kitts and Nevis' Residents Invited to UVI Masters Programmes

Dr. Jones and Mr. Washington
Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 08, 2014 (SKNIS): Residents of St. Kitts and Nevis who already posses a Bachelor’s Degree have yet another opportunity to further their education, as explained by several deans of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI).

UVI Dean of the School of Business Aubrey Washington explained the relationship between St. Kitts and Nevis and UVI has always been strong considering the positive experiences with the undergraduate programmes.  He said the offerings in the Masters Programme would include business administration, public administration, psychology, teacher education, math with a specialized portion for teachers and marine science.

Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Dr. Simon Jones Hendrickson also made reference to the longevity of the association and some of the notable Kittitians and Nevisians who attended the institution. These alumni included Hugh Heyliger, Honourable Richard Skerritt, Jaydee Caines, Johnathon Bass, Frank Mills, Honourable Vance Amory, Carolyn Adams and himself.  He said that the University has ties with colleges in other islands.

“We have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Anguilla Community College, with the H. Lavity Stoutt College in the Tortola, but we also have one in place here [Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College] at the undergraduate level,” Dr. Jones emphasized.  “And we believe we want to consolidate that and move forward.  … We are saying let’s continue the dialogue, let’s continue the momentum because we are part and parcel of the Northern Caribbean, where we feel we have something to offer.  Given the development taking place in St. Kitts and Nevis, we want to be part of that particular process.”

Mr. Washington referred to the relationship with CFBC as excellent while Dr. Jones emphasized that all credits earned at CFBC were transferable enabling a student to complete a bachelor’s degree within one or two years at UVI.  The gentlemen noted that they had attended several meetings with education officials and potential masters students where topics discussed included financing options and taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

It was also explained that UVI offers specific courses in particular areas.  This includes the Programme on Entrepreneurship in the School of Business.

“We’ve recently received a US$5,000,000.00 gift from one of our tenants in the Research and Technogy Park and every year “13D” provides sponsorship of a competition where the winner gets US$30,000.00, second place US$20,000.00 and third place US$10,000.00 to start their own business,” Mr. Washington informed.  “Right now we have a minor in entrepreneurship – and I’ll say this here first, we’ll soon have a major in entrepreneurship.”

It was also explained that there was a hands-on course that introduces artists to the business side of the music industry, inclusive of a studio attachment for the in studio experience.

Further information pertaining to the UVI Masters Programmes as well as on the learning institution in general can be obtained from www.uvi.edu as well as from the UVI Facebook and Twitter accounts.  The local contact at CFBC is Yasmin Davis.
