Identity of murdered man released

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE identity of the young man who was shot to death this morning in Westbourne Ghaut has been released by the police.

     

    Speaking with this publication, Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Lyndon David revealed the name as Istan Mitcham.

     

    He said Mitcham is about 24 years old.

     

    Providing some details about what the police’s investigations have revealed, David informed that, “Sometime around 8:30a.m., police received a call about a shooting incident at West Bourne Street, the lower section. As we got here we saw the lifeless body of a young male lying on a piece of concrete step. 

     

    “We are currently gathering as much information as possible to establish what really took place. At this time we don’t have as many details but as details unfold, the media and the general public will certainly be notified from the police press and Public Relations Department.”

     

    SKNVibes understands that Mitcham sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

     

    Inspector David made a plea for persons with information to come forward and assist the police with their investigations.

     

    “We are appealing to persons who may have information to call the Violent Crime Unit (VCU) at 467-1888, the nearest police station or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477) and pass on the information. You can do it anonymously.”

     

    He was also questioned about whether the police are concerned about the area being a hotspot.

     

    “Almost all areas in the Federation or in the world can be a hotspot. This is one of the areas we have concerns about and we are just hoping that persons in this area will realize what is taking place around them and want to be giving more assistance to the police. We get assistance but we need that assistance to be improved in order to solve crimes in a much faster manner. That is what we are appealing for at this time.”

     

    Asked about the identity of the victim, the Inspector indicated that that would be withheld until the next-of-kin is properly informed of his demise.

     

    “We are going to withhold the name for the time being to make sure we establish a number of things… We have to make sure the next-of-kin is properly informed and identified the body…”

     

    On Saturday morning (Oct. 18) three individuals were wounded at Bakers Corner in a shooting incident and just two days ago, Shammond Herbert Liburd was shot and killed along the road which leads to the old Sugar Pier at the C. A. Paul Industrial Site.

     

    Police have indicated that they are making investigations into these incidents.
