Astaphan says Dominicans, West Africans coming to vote

Dwyer Astaphan
By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A former minister in the Labour Party Administration, Dwyer Astaphan, is claiming that Dominicans and West Africans would be coming to St. Kitts to vote in the upcoming election, and that Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas is planning to establish a Consulate in Nigeria.

Astaphan made these accusations Tuesday, last, during Operation Rescue’s talk show programme ‘The Operations Room’ on WINN FM.

Reiterating a statement he made in the recent past, Astaphan alleged that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party had rigged the election in Constituency Number Four during the last election and that an expected voter exchange is being planned between St. Kitts and Dominica.

“I told you all about the cheating that took place in Constituency Four in the last election; people coming in from Number Six - over 60 people. Two boats from Statia - 48 people. I told you all about the deal for a voter exchange between Dominica and here for the upcoming election; and this is why people don’t want the two elections to be held so close to each other. It will affect the migratory opportunities for the cheating to take place.

“I told you all that Dominicans will come here to vote in the names of African students, but it is not just only in those names they will come to vote with. They would vote in the names of people overseas, citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis by descent; some who have never come to this country but have been somehow registered. Some of those Dominicans will be brought in to vote in their names.”

“But that is not all,” he emphasised, adding: “Remember some of those citizens (overseas-based), and there was a mad rush to give them passports? Some of them will come and some will be fortunate to get a free ticket to come. Well, for those who can’t come, Dominicans will vote for them. But the imposter voting doesn’t end there. The intention is to bring West Africans here to vote, bearing the heavy accent of the Nigerian students who have been registered here; most of whom have already left the country but their names remain on the Voters List.”

He insinuated that some people who speak with exaggeration about confidence are scared and would gladly accept all the votes they could get.

“It seems that those who boast about much confidence are in truth and in fact scared like hell, and then want every vote that they can get. Whether it’s from Christ Church, Barnes Ghaut, Bermuda, Connecticut, Lagos, Leeds or wherever, Roseau, they want the votes. Real or imposter votes, they want them! And some of the West Africans, they actually come here from Africa, but if a way can be made to bring them in from closer – maybe some in the region living, maybe some in the States or England – for them to come and do their imposter voting. That, of course, would cost less, but you have several hundred names of Nigerian students registered on the List and I would virtually guarantee you that not more than 10 percent of them are still in the Federation.”

The former National Security Minister made reference to a Nigerian family that exerts strong influence in that West African state, accusing it of doing preparatory work, and stated that during the Nigerians Independence celebration Dr. Douglas spoke of establishing a Consulate in that country.

“And with all of this happening, last weekend you had a very influential Nigerian family here wining and dining in St. Kitts and doing preparatory work for what is to come. And coincidentally, there was a Nigerian Independence celebration at the Marriott hotel. A number of the Nigerian students went. Denzil Douglas made a speech to them and he told them that within three weeks he would be going to Nigeria o set up a St. Kitts-Nevis Consulate there.

“So, right now t is very possible that Denzil Douglas is in Nigeria looking to set up that Consulate. It could very well be that one of the primary objectives for that Consulate in Nigeria...is not being related to establishing and deepening trade and cultural ties between the two countries, it could be, and people will get to know later, ways and means to come to St. Kitts and to reap havoc and injustice in our electoral process.”

Astaphan however emphasised: “We ain’t going to let it happen!”
