BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE media, teachers of the Basseterre High School (BHS) and others have been accused of engaging in “fear-mongering” and fuelling anxiety in relation to the BHS situation.

The accusation was made by Minister of Education the Hon. Nigel Carty during his delivery of an update on the BHS saga in the House of Parliament late last week.

“In fact the levels of the substance detected were 10 times lower…than the limit of the WHO standard… Despite that, there has been an emotional abuse of teachers and students at the school by some media houses who refer to the Basseterre High School with all sorts of things, names… that would instil fear…

“This deliberate action by some media operatives who know better, they understand the effects of their irresponsible actions… I refer again to CARPHA’s observation of the impact of these kinds of actions on reports of illness and the institution.”

Minister Carty also made reference to “three principle instigators” who “engage in fear-mongering every time we have our BHS PTA meeting. They speak first, they deny everything the report is saying and they put their own spin…very fortunate.

He said an elevated level of anxiety at the BHS has been identified by a medical practitioner.

“The Ministry of Health also offered support to deal with the high level of anxiety which understandably exists at the school. The doctor has identified that there is a high level of anxiety at the school…”

The Education Minister also spoke of reports which suggest that “a number of teachers have been actively creating that anxiety, maybe not deliberately but as students report and as parents report to us in the Ministry there are teachers who are instrumental in feeding that anxiety…”

He also indicated that the staff at the school has been uncooperative in the “submission of medical reports to an appropriate public health official” as advised by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).
