Statement by Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Leader of Team Unity on the People’s Victory in the MONC Appeal.

Press Release

On Monday 27 October 2014 the OECS Court of Appeal delivered an important victory for democracy and for the people of St Kitts-Nevis. The shameful efforts of the out-going Douglas regime to undermine the functioning of Parliament by prohibiting the tabling and debate of theMotion Of No Confidence(MONC), came up for scrutiny. The Appellate court dismissed the government’s appeal in which the government challenged the Court’s locus-standing in Parliamentary matters.

The frivolous appeal by the Douglas administration came after a historic 12 February ruling by the learned Justice DashanRhamdhani.  Justice Ramdhani found that members of Parliament had a right to bring a MONC and that the MONC ought to be given priority over any other business to be tabled in Parliament. The learned Justice also stated that it made a mockery of Constitutional democracy if a majority of MPs were ready to vote in favour on MONC and the said MONC was not tabled. He urged government to do the principled thing and table the MONC.

The illegitimate minority Douglas regime knowing that it could not survive a vote on the MONC (as 6 of 11 members of Parliament had already declared their lack of support of Douglas as Prime Minister and their intention to vote on a MONC) sought by subterfuge and shenanigans to delay the inevitable defeat by appealing to the OECS Court of Appeal. On Monday the Court of Appeal rejected the government’s argument and referred the matter for a determination by the High Court below.  Anotherdefeat for theillegitimate government and another victory for the people
of St. Kitts and Nevis and Team Unity.

For nigh 2 years the Douglas led illegitimate government has been operating without the constitutional basis to do so. Its right to govern being validated because it no longer secured the support of a majority of elected members of Parliament. Like some rogue governments in the Middle East and Africa, Douglas refuses to abide by the rule
of law and disrespects our constitution.

For nigh 2 years, he has been wasting the taxpayers monies on legal fees reaching in the tens of million.  While that squander mania has been taking place, the hospitals are run down. The main hospitalis without medicines, soap and toilet paper, our police force is inadequately supported with vehicles and gears, the Basseterre High School remains contaminated with no end in sight to the pain and anguish for our teachers and our students alike.  While Douglas squanders the people's money the corruption in government escalates. The people are up to their heads in debt, our country faces a spiraling crime situation and we continue to earn thedubious distinction of being the murder capital of the world.

The time has come for Dr. Douglas to leave now and settle in the sunset of retirement. The time has come for their irresponsible undermining of Parliament to end. The time has come for the tabling and the debating of the MONC. Douglas should call the elections now. This would facilitate the voting process where ourpeople, the people of St Kitts and Nevis can vote for a Team Unity government and the realization of a better quality of life. I am encouraged by the Court’s ruling. I want the people of St Kitts and Nevis to know that we are one step closer to implementing the prosperity agenda for every person in St Kitts and Nevis.

Team Unity's Prosperity Agenda will mean among other things:

    1) Removal of an extortionate VAT from food, medicine, funeral expenses, educational and infant supplies.

    2) More and better quality jobs for our young people with
    decent pay.

    3) More of our citizens and Caribbean nationals receiving
    support to start-up new businesses.

    4) Lower taxes

    5) A growing economy revolving around a diverse tourism
sector, agriculture, manufacturing, financial services, and alternative and renewable energy.

    6) Improved health care and education systems for
    self-reliance and result- oriented development.

    7) Lower cost of living.

    8) Reduced costof mortgages and student loans.

Poll after poll has indicated that Douglas has long passed his expiry date to lead this nation. But he refuses to accept the resounding call of the people to allow their voice to be heard by means of the ballot. They know that St Kitts and Nevis is moving in the wrong direction. They know that St Kitts and Nevis is at a crossroad .The people are the ones feeling the pain of the Douglas regime. The people are calling for the new leaders with innovative ideas to improve the lives of the citizens of this nation.  St Kitts and Nevis needs honest and decent leadership to promote justice, democracy and prosperity for all.  And Team Unity is ready to for the challenge of such causes.
