BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CALYPSO season in St. Kitts and Nevis kicked off this past weekend with politics being the main course of the topics of the performers at the joint Proud Sounds and Legends Calypso tent.

Opening the calypso season on Saturday (Nov. 1) was Persuader of the Proud Sound Calypso Tent who did a follow up of his song from last year ‘A lost me door key’ with ‘A find me door key’.

Godfrey then took to the stage and performed a rendition dubbed ‘Our Carnival’ which highlighted the current state of St. Kitts and Nevis’ main festival.

Rock-a-fella brought some laughs to the event by performing a social commentary called ‘Wa dey bawling for’.

However the night belonged to the energetic King Lala who performed two songs and brought a barrel of laughs with a song called ‘Divorce’. The rendition speaks to the current political situation and brought great applause from the fair-sized crowd on hand who requested an encore.

I-Soursop performed a social commentary tune called ‘Corrupted Man’ and received a big applause from the crowd after leaving the stage.

Lord Kut also performed two songs, one pun-filled song highlighting the current political climate - ‘Monk’ - and the other was a tribute to steel pan player Cyril ‘Puntan’ Webster.

After 10 calypsonians from the Proud Sounds Tent, the Legends side featured fewer but some had similar impact.

Opening for the Legends Tent was Sparta who performed a soca-flavoured song called ‘Hey Girl’.

The standout performer for the Legends tent however was Lady Diva who performed a song called ‘Dear Fans’ which was a hard-hitting political song that warned that if measures are not taken, the next General Election could be decided by foreign voters.

Another hard-hitting political song was performed by Jungle Lion. His tune ‘He Lie Lie Lie’ suggested that everything the Prime Minister says, one should do the opposite.

Providing a hearty laugh was Hot Rod who continued his trend with his play on words when he sang ‘He want one for Kim’.

Also making a surprise appearance was Unexpected who sang an extempo song and promised that he would be ready for the next tent.

The MCs for the Launch were S.B. from the Legends Calypso Tent and Calypso Reggie from the Proud Sounds, who sang a song called ‘Letter to the PM’ which was advising the Prime Minister about how he could win the next election.
