BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - REIGNING Power Soca Monarch Bjorn 'Mr. Hype' Bassue is promising to ‘Chook’ for Sugar Mas 43 as he aims to successfully defend his title in December.
In an interview with this publication, he explained what the song was about.
“It is about refusing to work on J’Ouvert morning when the boss calls you and say he want you to come in because somebody did not show up for work or somebody call in sick… And it is basically telling the boss ain’t no way I working on J’Ouvert morning and the only way I going be working is behind of somebody woman.
“Then it goes on to play with the word ‘chook’ which is native to St. Kitts and the Caribbean to ‘chook’. Well there are different ways to use ‘chook’.”
Mr. Hype also explained the motivation behind the song.
“The motivation behind it is because J’Ouvert is something a lot of us look forward to. We decided to highlight that activity and to build a story behind it because it is something that so many people could relate to. Nobody at all want to work J’Ouvert, everybody wants to go out and enjoy themselves and go out and ‘chook’ something like the song says. It was just to put the spotlight on J’Ouvert morning and how much we look forward to it.”
He also told this publication that he was planning on release other song though he was not sure how much would be released.
“Yes we are planning to release more. I don’t know how much as yet. So there should be more to come.”
He was also confident of successfully defending his Power Soca title with this tune.
“Definitely the song is humorous, high energy and naturally it will grab people’s attention and I think these things are the winning ingredients.”
Mr. Hype also spoke about the feedback he has gotten since the release of the track.
“A lot of people really love the song and enjoying it. I feels like it is a repeat of last year. When I walk the streets and everybody is repeating a phrase from the song, it’s spreading, it’s out there and people like it. There are probably people out there who don’t like it but it is a give-and-take. So far, majority of the responses I received are for it.”
Mr. Hype won the 2013 Power Soca Monarch with the song ‘Wuk It’.
