BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE students and staff of the Beach Allen Primary School are the beneficiaries of a recent 320-book donation made by the Money Gram Foundation and the Hands Across the Sea organisation, for the boosting of their library.

Youlouca Browne, Business Development Manager for Delisle Walwyn, local agent for Money Gram - a leading global money transfer services company, explained that in 2012, the Money Gram Foundation was formed and has as its main philosophy, economic empowerment and advancement through education.

She said led to the partnership with Hands Across the Sea and that partnership is resulting in the rejuvenation of 12 school libraries across the region.

“We are pleased that this year, MoneyGram is supporting literacy in six Caribbean countries including St Kitts and Nevis to the tune of US$29,000. The MoneyGram Foundation has partnered with Hands Across the Sea to rejuvenate 12 primary school libraries across the islands and replace the libraries' out-of-date books with new, age-appropriate reading material for 2,500 students each year,” Brown explained.

A brief ceremony was held last week at the school during which local representative of the Hands Across the Sea Becky Rutland, indicated that her organisation believes in literacy as the foundation of children’s education and was pleased to be associated with the venture.

She thanked the Money Gram Foundation for providing the financial backing for the project, which would benefit the students and staff of the school.

Principal of the school, Emileta Warner-Paul also thanked both organisations for investing in the future of the Beach Allen students through their partnership.

“One behalf of the students and staff, we here at Beach Allen are very grateful for the assistance from Hands Across the Sea and we also want to extend congratulations to Money Gram, to Delisle Walwyn for joining the partnership with Hands Across the Sea.”

The St. James Primary School on Nevis would also be receiving some 360 books as part of this initiative and schools on Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines would also benefit.
