Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, 11th November, 2014, – Residents of Central Basseterre and others from any other part of St. Kitts and Nevis are being invited to take advantage of a free legal aid clinic that is being hosted by lawyer Jonel Powell, this weekend.

Powell says the clinic is being organized to help those in need of legal assistance, but might be finding great difficulty in paying for even the basic costs of such consultation.

He says the clinic will see a number of lawyers making presentations about the laws of St. Kitts and Nevis, while giving an insight into what decisions should be made and what are the best ways of getting legal problems resolved.

Powell indicated that this is the second time he is doing the clinic and it is being repeated because of the success they had with the first edition and which got positive responses from those who benefited and who indicated that there is a great need for such services.

Powell, who is the candidate for the People’s Action Movement, PAM, in the upcoming elections, says the event will be held on Saturday, 15th November at his Central Basseterre Constituency Office, located on the corner of Cayon Street and Thibou Avenue. It begins at 10:00am and will run until 3:00pm.

He says interested persons may also call the Secretariat of his constituency office, at 764 5742, to make an appointment, or they may email the office at pamcentralbasseterregroup@gmail.com.

Powell says that as a lawyer, he has realized that there are many instances where people are not able to pursue certain matters that are affecting them because of the challenges they have in meeting the cost of lawyers.

This clinic therefore, says Powell, is simply an effort to give back to the people, especially those of Central Basseterre, where he grew up and to the country generally. He says more people have to begin to show that they care about people especially those who are not able to help themselves because of the problems they are facing.

This is about “people caring for people,” the lawyer pointed out.

The lawyer says it is by popular demand “we are bringing it to Central Basseterre. Basically, we would have a number of lawyers on hand, prepared and willing to give consultation to people, no matter their background. This will be done free of cost on just about any issue they might bring.”

“The last time around, a number of persons seemed to really value the advice that was given. I too, as a lawyer know and understand that legal fees can be very expensive and in hard times like these it is another way of giving back to the community.”

He however stressed that they would not be providing any representation in court, and that it is just a consultation for persons to be guided about what course of action they wish to take going forward with the various legal issues affecting them.

Powell is making it clear that the free legal clinic is not only for residents of his constituency, and he says anyone, from any part of St. Kitts and Nevis, can attend and will be assisted.
