Lord Felix introduces 'De Passport Man'

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MANY remember the “I want to live in Dubai” calypso from last year’s carnival and notwithstanding that Lord Felix again, is not competing in the Calypso Monarch Competition, he is back with another thought-provoking piece which he has named, ‘De Passport Man’.

Lord Felix sat down in an interview with SKNVibes yesterday (Nov. 12) and provided an explanation of what the song is about and where the inspiration for the lyrics came from.

“Calypso is social comment so over the year when things happen that you think might be worthy of comment, you pick up on them and maybe the idea comes to write a calypso if you are a calypsonian and if you are writing, then you choose between the different things that happen. Some people write about carnival and so on.

“Well over the last couple of year, one of the things that has happened of note to people in the island has been people being found around the world with St. Kitts passports, sometimes diplomatic passports. And there have been allegations that somebody has been involved in crime of some sort, often financial crime. And that seemed to be worthy of comment. So I, over a period of time write a calypso on the subject.”

He explained that song is written in dialogue format and speaks of a conversation between himself and another individual whom he said is ‘De Passport Man’.

“De Passport Man is really the name because it occurred to me, if you are writing a song or story, how do you frame it? And a line appeared to me one day, ‘a mit a man in independence square’ and that gave me the idea of the framing of the song would be in a conversation between me the writer and a man and I called him the passport man.”

Since 2010, Lord Felix, who is legally known as Felix Redmill, has been making contributions to the calypso art form during the Sugar Mas festivities. In that year, he sang ‘Ah Never Goin’ Drink Again’ and in 2011, he sang “Where We Going From Here”.

The Kittitian who lives in the UK, took a break in 2012 and last year his tune ‘I Want To Live In Dubai’ drew much attention and became one of the favourites for the season.

Lord Felix said the popularity which his song gained last year surprised him and he is hoping that the song he penned this year and has already begun performing at the tents, would be just as impactful.

“Last year, it was phenomenal. I was taken aback by how much people like my song and this year I was really taken aback with how much people like my song and this year I hope the song is well-received”.

He ensures that he performs at tent sessions  but Lord Felix does not actively compete in the Calypso Monarch Competition because, as he explained, he has family obligations which coincide around the time that the finals for the competition are held. And it would be unfair for him, having advanced to the final round, to inform that he would not be able to participate.
