WAHS and BHS begin shift system next Monday

The Washington Archibald High School

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - COMMENCING next week Monday (Nov. 17), the staff and students of the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) and the Basseterre High School (BHS) would commence a shift system which would see both bodies alternating use of the former’s facility.

According to a release issued by the “Ministry of Education Media Unit”, the WAHS would take the first shift which runs from 8:00a.m. to 1:15p.m. and BHS would take the second which runs from 1:30p.m. to 5:45p.m.

The decision came as a result of findings of an Arbitration Panel which called for the immediate extraction of the BHS staff and students from their facility because of suspected contamination which is believed to be making staff and students there ill.

The panel recommended that the shift system be implemented and it took just about one week for the plans to be finalised, but not before some back-and-forth had taken place between the stakeholders.

SKNVibes understands that the Ministry of Education’s initial proposal was for the WAHS to use their facility from 8:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. and the BHS would use same from 2:15p.m. to 7:00p.m., a suggestion which did not sit well with members of the BHS Parent Teachers Association (PTA).

In an interview with SKNVibes, Principal of the BHS Carlene Morton explained that that proposal put BHS students at an unfair and unsafe disadvantage and did not speak of equitable sharing of the facility.

She indicated her intention to propose that the BHS take the earlier shift to commence either at 7:00 or 7:30a.m. with WAHS commencing their shift shortly after midday and conclude well before dusk.

She informed that that proposal was rejected but the 8:00am – 1:15pm and 1:30pm – 5:45pm shifts were agreed upon.

“The students will attend school is two shifts the first being 8:00am to 1:15pm for Washington Archibald High School and the second being 1:30 to 5:45pm for Basseterre High School. Additionally those students who do not have transportation will be taken home by Bus on a daily basis”, the Ministry of Education Media Unit informed.

Principal Morton explained that, “We all agreed yesterday that those are the times that we would accept so those are the times that we are working with… Basseterre High School staff and parents have already indicated that 6:00p.m., although it is not ideal, is much more palatable than the 7:00p.m. that they suggested before. And so they were willing to work with that.”

She expressed that they are “absolutely happy that our staff and students are in a safer work/school environment. That is a major area of relief for us because…”

SKNVibes visited the WAHS and asked Principal Clifford Govia his thoughts on the shift system and he expressed his preference not to comment as such is governed by specific protocol.
