PM Douglas urges clear sense of responsibility in use of new police cars

Police Sergeant Donna Henderson shows St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas features of the new police cars donated by the Republic of China (Taiwan)

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 14TH 2014 (CUOPM) – Accepting a fleet of 10 new police vehicles from the Republic of China (Taiwan), St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister , the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the gesture is another expression of Taiwan’s commitment to advancing the peace and stability of the Federation.

“ I say ‘yet another’ because there are many ways, as we know, in which the Republic of China (Taiwan) has helped to advance peace and stability – such as in the area of our closed circuit television surveillance and motorcycle , for example – and for these we thank them,” said Prime Minister Douglas at the mid-morning ceremony on Friday.

Dr. Douglas said peace and stability are overriding objectives of nations and law enforcement is key to the attainment of peace and the maintenance of stability.

“The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has undertaken a focused and effective campaign of law enforcement and crime-fighting in recent years, and, with a few regrettable exceptions, the Force has had a dramatic and much-welcomed impact on the level of criminal activity in the Federation,” he told invited guests who included Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin; Chief Secretary, Mr. Joseph Edmeade;  Permanent Secretary for the Anti-Crime Unit, Her Excellency Ambassador Astona Browne; The Republic of China Resident Ambassador, His Excellency, Miguel Li-jey Tsao; Commissioner Of Police, Mr. C.J. Walwyn; Commander of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, Lt. Colonel Patrick Wallace and senior officials of law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Douglas used the occasion to praise and commend the men and women of the Royal St. Christopher-Nevis Police Force, Commissioner C. G. Walwyn and the members of the High Command “who have made these dramatic advances, and these unquestionable improvements, possible.”

He said that mobility is key to effective law enforcement, response time is an important component in the maintenance of law and order and police vehicles are key to both mobility and response time in the 21st century.

Prime Minister Douglas said the 10 Luxgen model cars which are being added to the police fleet today are items of great value and items of value – whether at the level of the individual or the level of the Government - must be treated with diligence and care.

“I therefore urge the High Command to insist that any person using these – or any other – police vehicles demonstrate the clear sense of responsibility that is so key to the proper care and maintenance to any important asset.  Spare parts, as we know, have been provided to assist with general maintenance and so I insist, once again, that maintenance must be as great a priority as use.  I stress and repeat – the care and maintenance of these and other assets must be as great a priority as their use,” said Dr. Douglas, who has responsibility for the Anti-Crime Unit.

He said the ten new vehicles will increase the visibility of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force on the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis and it was key to the effective implementation of the government’s crime prevention strategy.
“These vehicles are equipped with modern technology.  And this will heighten the Force’s ability to protect and serve,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted that St. Kitts and Nevis has distinguished itself in many key areas - and  has won the respect of impartial international observers and analysts the world over.

“The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has stepped forward to demonstrate its determination to defend, to protect, and to serve.  And the Republic of China (Taiwan) has similarly stepped forward in support of the Force in this most important endeavour. I commend and thank the Force, and I commend and thank the Republic of China (Taiwan). Let us now go forward, therefore – in a spirit of determination and excellence – to meet and complete the important tasks at hand,” said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader.
