Press Release

The Ministry of Health issues this guidance information having regard for the Ebola situation update issued on November 14th by World Health Organization (WHO).

Knowing that the first case of Ebola in the Caribbean will be an imported one, the Federation’s Ebola preparedness and response measures are heavily focused on the prevention of virus entry from Ebola-affected countries.

As of November 14, 2014, the following are known:

1:  Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia continue to have widespread and intense transmission.  Entry of virus from these countries is highly unlikely because of the travel restrictions imposed by the Federation.

2:  In Mali, there have been 4 reported cases, including 3 reported deaths.  A total of 256 contacts are being monitored by national authorities with the assistance of international organizations.  Entry of virus from Mali is highly unlikely given travel restrictions imposed on Ebola cases and contacts.

3:  In the United States of America, there have been 4 cases and 1 death.  All patients have been discharged from hospital.  All contacts in the country have successfully completed the 21-day quarantine/ follow-up period.   Entry of virus from the USA is not possible.

4:  Nigeria was declared transmission-free on October 19, 2014.  Entry of virus from Nigeria is not possible.

The nature of air travel is such that constant vigilance is warranted and carried out in conjunction with regional and international health, immigration and security authorities.

The Ministry of Health and partners will continue to maintain the highest possible state of readiness.

Further updates will be issued as warranted.
