Cayon Football Club's Player's Profile - Melroy Morton

Melroy Morton
By: Cayon Football Club, Press Release

Meet our player for this week:

    Name: Melroy Morton

    Age: 24

Number of years playing football: Seventeen (17) years

Number of years playing with the Cayon Football Club: “I have been playing with the Cayon Football Team for a little over five (5) years”

How did you become interested in the game of football?

“Football is in my bloodline.  My father played the sport for many years and my mother played and is still into the game of football as an official.  My brothers are also footballers so it’s as if I couldn’t escape being a footballer.  I was born into it and will probably play football until I really can’t play anymore at all!”

What motivates you as a player?

“My biggest motivation as a player is my brother, Kurt Morton who is also a player of the Cayon Football Team and holds the position of Team Captain.  My brother just wouldn’t allow me to quit and he always tells me I have to put out my best at all times, no matter what is going on in my life.  As he says, we don’t just play for ourselves, but we play for the team, the community and the large number of fans.  Sometimes I beat up myself for making mistakes and I may want to stop playing but Kurt just wouldn’t allow me to give up.  When I’m on the field and I see him putting out his all, I know I can’t let my brother pull the load alone so I have to match his energy or sometimes pull him up when he down.  More times we may disagree with each other but in the end, my brother is my motivation.”

Who is your football icon and why?

“David Alaba, he’s my football icon.  Alaba is versatile, the man could play any position on the field but the other reason why I respect this man is because he was the youngest player to play for Austria.  You see, many people comment on how young the players of the Cayon Football Team are but being young doesn’t mean we can’t shine.  That doesn’t mean we can’t play and it doesn’t mean we can’t win!  Experience is a great thing but those who are experience players, they had to have been young and inexperienced at one time too so I see nothing wrong with our young squad.  We will continue to improve and we will learn from our mistakes as we go along and with every game we play, we will become more and more experienced in the sport.  So I look up to this player, and just Alaba, me and my team mates will continue to improve until our best will bring our club victory!.”

If you can change one thing about Football in St. Kitts and Nevis, what would it be and why?

“For football to continue to grow in the Federation, I think more training for officials, especially referees has to be done.  Some referees seem to lack training and professionalism.  It’s as if they sometimes hold personal feelings that have nothing to do with the sport against players when they are officiating the games.  That’s not right especially when they have all the power on the field.”

Do you agree with the theme “It Takes a Community to Raise A Champion Team?” Briefly explain your answer:

“I agree with this theme to the maximum.  Every week we see more and more of the community coming to support us.  Even just being in the streets, community members would say how proud we make them feel.  That’s the vibes we want to continue to push us more and to feel great about what we are doing for our community.  I mean, we could have been doing other things but we using football to do positive and to build our community so the community must continue to show us love.  That’s how we will continue to push forward no matter what negatives we come up against.  We will Get It Right, no matter how young and inexperienced!  Once we keep it together, we will keep on moving forward one game at a time!”
