By: LIBA, Press Release

December 8th, 2014  --  In a meeting held on December 7th 2014 in Montserrat, a new constitution was adopted to govern basketball in the Leeward Islands and an Executive was elected to administer the development of the game in the sub-region. The Leeward Islands Basketball Association was first established in the early 80’s and administered basketball in the sub region until the early 2000’s when the Association became dormant and virtually non-existent. The election of the executive is seen as a resurrection of the LIBA and by extension the re-establishment of the highly successful LIBA Tournaments of the 80’s , 90’s up to 2001.

The newly elected members of this new LIBA Executive are as follows:

    Mr. Daryll Matthew (Antigua): President
    Mr. Gilmore Williams (Montserrat): Secretary-General
Mr. Kenroy Tobias (St. Kitts): Vice President
Ms. Schakima Wanda Parri (Nevis): Treasurer
Mr. Rudy Webster (Anguilla): Public Relations Officer
To be held by Barbuda representative: Assistant Secretary / Treasurer

The executive took a major decision regarding upcoming activities. The  LIBA decided that the annual LIBA Championships will be a National Team Championship competition in both Juniors and Seniors with the different age categories playing in alternating years (2014 – Seniors, 2015 – Juniors etc.)

The islands of Antigua, Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and Tortola were represented at the meeting.

“The resurrection of the Leeward Island Basketball Association through the election of this new executive is much welcomed and long overdue. I have long contended that the absence of a sub regional administrative and competitive structure as hampered the development of basketball in the sub region.

I commend the administrators who have come together to guide the forward upward development of basketball in the sub region in particular the leeward islands and I congratulate the entire executive on their election, said Wallis Wilkin St.Kitts Basketball Administrator and Secretary General of the St.Kitts-Nevis Amateur Basketball Association
