BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - HE performed taxi services for more than two decades and was a regular fixture at The Circus on Friday evenings providing his customers with an intimate setting to engage in friendly games of dominoes while offering a variety of beverages, including his signature concoction made from and known as ‘seamoss’.

News of the unfortunate demise of Wilmoth ‘Seamoss’ Hunkins, who resided at Old Road, circulated earlier today (Dec. 9) and sent shockwaves through the taxi fraternity.

Information reaching this publication indicates that ‘Seamoss’ died earlier this morning apparently of natural causes.

SKNVibes visited the Taxi Stand at The Circus and spoke with a number of his colleagues who are remembering him as a hard-working and very respectful individual.

“I was a very good friend of the Seamoss Man and we go way back. It has been 35 years since I knew him. He has been a wonderful person, good inspiration to me and the whole taxi industry.

“I felt so sorrowful to hear about his passing and only yesterday I actually spoke to him and he seemed to be doing pretty well. When I got the sad news this morning I couldn’t believe it. I really felt bad about it and I am going to miss him very much. He was a very nice individual,” Vanrick ‘Sir Walter’ Walters expressed.

‘Cave Man’ remembers ‘Seamoss’ as “a very positive person and he was a very hard worker. The news really shocked me and may his soul rest in eternal peace”.

In the words of Edward Stapleton, ‘Seamoss’ was “an alright person, a nice fellow”.

Elva Wallace – a taxi operator for 45 years – said she remembers when ‘Seamoss’ joined the business and she marked him as a “pleasant person. He always worked hard, he even brought his sons into the taxi business. I knew his mother well from since he was very young.”

She said she too is saddened by his sudden passing.

A taxi and tour operator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he drew inspiration from ‘Seamoss’ and is appreciative of the contribution he has made to the tourism industry.

Also remembering ‘Seamoss’ is former Commissioner of Police Austin Williams.

“I remember him as a jovial, hard-working fellow. Very friendly! And I believe he made a name for himself in the taxi service as an outstanding taxi operator and ambassador of the Federation.”

Williams said ‘Seamoss’ was also known as the Local Chemist and was not only famous for his sea moss beverage but for another concoction known as ‘leathers’.

A frequent visitor to ‘Seamoss’ Friday evening social hangout spot, Williams added that he would definitely miss the Local Chemist.

‘Seamoss’ owned a fleet of busses that were used to provide taxi and tour services for locals as well as visitors to the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis.
