The SKNOC holds 2014 Annual General Assembly at the Marriott Hotel and Resort

By: SKNOC, Press Release

Tuesday, 9th December, 2014  -- The St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) convened its 2014 General Assembly at the Marriott Hotel and Resort on Thursday, 4th December with President Alphonso Bridgewater presiding. A full complement of representatives of the Member Federations was present as well as the entire Executive, save for Treasurer Glenn Quinlan and Member Jennifer Nero who were both off island.

The Assembly received detailed and provocative Reports covering the calendar year under review from President Bridgewater and Secretary-General/Glenville Jeffers. These Reports generated extensive and passionate feedback from the representatives and led to a number of suggestions for future initiatives and interventions on the part of the SKNOC. Member Federations were lavish with their praise and appreciation for the significant and sustained support (financial, technical, equipment, training) received from the SKNOC. The two-member, full-time staff was also highly accredited for their steadfast stewardship.

The membership supported the President’s call for emphasis on the themes of “podium preparation” and “podium presence”, focused attention on creating a cadre of coaches who are more result-oriented, an enhanced website project initiative, the need for establishing formal agreements with local, substantial suppliers and service providers and the continuation of the presidential dialogues with elite athletes. There was also support for the recommendation for the SKNOC to host a ‘Gala Awards Event’, which will also be income-generating in nature. Work has already commenced on the identifying of a venue, the determination of costs, possible featured speaker, and presence of VIP Sports Personalities etc.

The membership strongly supported the need for the SKNOC to consider staging/hosting a highly focused ‘sports symposium’ and to advocate for the drafting of a national sports policy with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders.

In the absence of the Treasurer, Glenn Quinlan, who was off island attending to Regional Volleyball Association matters in his capacity as President of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association, the Assistant Treasurer/Glenville Jeffers, presented the Treasurer’s Report and led the discussion related to the 2014-15 Budget. The membership accepted the Treasurer’s Report, approved the 2014-15 budget and adopted the Audited Financial Report for 2013-14.

In conclusion, President Bridgewater made reference to the Memorandum of Understand (MOU) that he recently signed to formalize the agreement between the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) and the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) for the “partnership and provision of mutual support on training and agreement for a quadrennial national sport federation exchange programme”. Under the similar rubric of partnership and collaboration, President Bridgewater advised the membership of his nigh finalization of an agreement with the National Olympic Committee of South Africa and the SKNOC. This Agreement is expected to be finalized in the new year (first quarter) when President Bridgewater visits South Africa. The scope of the Agreement will involve the sharing of resources, research, best practices in sport development, sports exchanges and access to the university personnel and equipment and facilities among other things. Initial, exploratory discussions were also engaged in by the president, with apparel supplier Kukri by President Bridgewater.
