BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE witty aspect of the Calypso art form will be in full display on Tuesday (Dec. 16) when 10 calypsonians would take the Carnival Village stage by storm in a bid to win the Sugar Mas’ 43 ‘Best of the Rest, Calypso Competition.
These calypsonians would have participated in the Senior Calypso Monarch Competition but did not make the cut during the eliminations.
According to the Carnival Committee, the contenders for that event are De Unexpected, Hot Rod, Rock-A-Fella, Singing Jennifer, Pa-u-la, King La La, Watusi, Honesty, Lucious and Lord Matt.
This particular competition was discontinued some years ago but was reinstated for Sugar Mas’ 43. And in speaking with SKNVibes, Carnival Chairman Sylvester Anthony explained that it was resumed by popular demand.
“I don’t know why it was stopped, because it was stopped before I became Carnival Chairman… A lot of calypsonians were asking for us to bring it back…It is one of those events that Carnival can afford to continue to host and I thought it would be good for us to put it back on. It is not a very expensive event and personally, as a Calypso fan, I think that is an event that we should continue to have…”
He said the show provides a golden opportunity for “Calypso lovers and aficionados…to hear their favourite calypsonians”.
Most of the calypsonians slated to contend are bringing to the stage a marriage of wit and social or political issues, personality and stage presence.
The event begins at 8:00 p.m. and the Master of Ceremony for the evening is Calypso Reggie.
