Antioch Baptist brings laughter at ‘In the Spirit of Christmas’

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE expectation was that the first night of ‘In the Spirit of Christmas’ would have been packed with poems, solos and musical renditions, all in remembrance of the birth of the Christ child. However, the surprise was more than pleasant when the attendees of the event last evening (Dec. 16) observed that this year the Christmas story was being told in musical form.

Having responsibility for last night’s event, members of the Antioch Baptist Church (ABC) put their singing, dancing and acting skills to good use in creatively telling the story that has long been told.

The story spoke of Mary and Joseph and how they sought room at an inn in Bethlehem but found none. They settled for the only available space, a stable, because Mary was soon to deliver her son Jesus, the Son of God.

As the story was being told, it was punctuated with intermittent songs by Ester Hodge, Yenesia Henry, McClaire Tully and Rommel Williams on the saxophone.

The musical inspired moments of solemnness, reflection and knee-slapping laughter on quite a number of occasions.

The musical ended with the cast, while engaging in song, dispersing into the audience, taking some of them by the hand and inviting them on stage to complete the act.

Following the event, Pastor of the ABC Lincoln Connor, who was also one of the actors in the musical, told SKNVibes their reason for performing a musical rather than the traditional script.

“We thought we would do a musical drama because we felt that that was the best way we can integrate completely the story of Christmas. Secondly, we really wanted to engage the children of our church, the young people, because we believe these seasons are critical to children. And so we felt that they should have a real good appreciation for the season, and this is one of the ways we felt we could do that.”

Asked about the humor element injected into the performance, Pastor Connor explained that “the Bible says to us that if all the things that were done were written the world couldn’t contain the books. And so I believe that a lot of scripture is supposed to be engaging and the details we have to fill in, because, no doubt, this would have been a time of anxiety for some people and different emotions and such. So we try to make it as palpable…as possible.”

SKNVibes spoke to a number of individuals following the event who declared that they thoroughly enjoyed it, while some expressed the wish for it to be longer.

In the Spirit of Christmas continues this evening at 7:30 and the final leg of the event takes place tomorrow at the same time and same venue.
