BASSETERRE St. Kitts, December 17th, 2014 -- President Alphonso Bridgewater of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) and President Carlos Nuzman of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) officially signed off on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between their two Olympic sporting bodies, in early November. The actual signing ceremony took place on the periphery of the historic ANOC General Assembly that was being held in Bangkok over the period November 2nd to 7th, 2014.
The MOU sets out to facilitate “partnership and provision of mutual support on training and agreement for a quadrennial national sport federation exchange programme”. It further speaks to the “(mutual) desire to co-operate in the sports field and, in particular, in the development of excellence in sport as it pertains to Olympic Games preparation and performance”
The SKNOC and the BOC commit to “work together to facilitate the establishment of strategic partnerships between the countries’ NF’s”, which include but is not limited to:
(i) Encourage the development of athlete exchanges between each other and between the national sports federations of both countries for participation in bilateral and multilateral competitions and training, as well as the exchange of officials, trainers, judges, experts and scientists for the participation in seminars, courses and counseling, together with meetings on subjects of mutual interest;
(ii) Partner re the exchange of coaches, technical specialists, methodologists, specialists in sports medicine and sports science;
(iii) Partner re Exchange, assistance and participation of athletes in training camps and competitions.
Carlos Nuzman, in addition to being the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, is the President of the Organizing Committee which is planning and implementing the next Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, July/August 2016. Mr. Nuzman is also Vice President of the Pan American Sports Organization and President of the South American Association of Olympic Committees and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The discussions with President Bridgewater, which culminated in the MOU, started over an extended period and were seriously resumed months ago during a visit to Rio de Janeiro by President Bridgewater.

Alphonso Bridgewater is a colleague of President Nuzman, both of whom have been serving on the Executive of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) for a number of years. Bridgewater is also the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of the Eastern Caribbean States (ANOCES) and an Executive Member of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees CANOC).
