OAS Permanent Council Adopts Declaration Supporting the Rapprochement between the United States and Cuba

By: OAS, Press Release

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) adopted today by acclamation a declaration in support of the announcements made by the governments of Cuba and the United States last December 17, which includes the intention to resume diplomatic relations.

The declaration, adopted by acclamation, reflects the “deep satisfaction” of the member states at “the historic announcement” and reiterates "the commitment of the Americas to dialogue among sovereign states."

The Permanent Council also expresses “its support for the implementation of measures conducive to the complete normalization of bilateral relations” between the two countries.

The meeting was chaired by the Permanent Representative of Guyana to the OAS, Ambassador Bayney R. Karran, who explained the spirit that led to the adoption of the declaration, asserting that “this announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter in the bilateral relation of these two member states and, therefore, is of great importance to us all.”

The adopted declaration includes footnotes by Bolivia, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

At today’s meeting, the delegations of Bolivia, Venezuela, the United States, Belize (on behalf of CARICOM), Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Guyana, Jamaica, Peru, Uruguay, Mexico, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Panama, Argentina, El Salvador, Chile, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname took the floor.
