BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN a rendition that spoke volumes to political leadership in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Mighty Sookie was last night (Dec. 23) crowned the 2014/2015 Junior Calypso Monarch while Cayon Pantastics retained their title in the Steel Pan Competition.

The Bay Road provided the scenery as the Mighty Sookie out of Nevis and eight young calypsonians entertained the fair-size crowd.

The young calypsonian’s stage performance and commanding voice won the judges’ nod when he dished out a song entitled ‘I Pray’, in which he stated that he was praying for political leaders of the Federation to obtain the wisdom required to put the nation on the right path.

The First Runner-up position went to former Monarch King Leo singing ‘Politics and Youth’, which highlighted the importance of youth in the current political climate in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Lady Niah was adjudged Second Runner-up while defending Monarch Lil Taj failed to attain a place in the top three due to some difficulties he encountered with the band while performing, which caused him to pause and recommence his rendition.

In addition to the Calypsos, the crowd was wowed by some excellent steel pan performances in two separate competitions.

In the 16-A-Side Competition, the Cayon Pantastics retained their title as Steel Pan Specialists, beating out second placed Petro Caribe Sugar Stix. Third place went to Steel on Fire out of Nevis.

The other two orchestras that participated in the competition were Nevis Pan Ensemble and Sparks Orchestra.

For the test piece upon which they were judged, each competitor had to perform King Ellie Matt’s 'Carnival in St. Kitts’.

In the Five-A-Side Competition, the Coronets took home the top prize while the First Runner-up prize went to Fire 5 and that of the Second Runner-up went to SKN Pan Assassins.
