Astro makes history; dethrones Richie Buntin

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THIS evening (Dec. 29) seven calypsonians will be attempting to dethrone the reigning Monarch, Richie Buntin, and in some quarters it is believed that patrons would see history in the making.

     

    History, they said, could be made by either Lady Diva as the first female to win the Monarchy in the history of the National Senior Calypso Monarch Competition, or Astro as the first Nevisian to do so.

    In addition to those two calypsonians and the Reigning Monarch, the others who will be performing this evening are Lord Kut, Queeney G, Socrates, Rudder and Big Lice. Singing Jackie is the Alternate.

    SKNVibes will be providing an up-to-date account of what is expected to be a hotly-contested competition.
     
    8:25 p.m. - The competion starts with the first competitor being Astro singing 'Flush It'.
    8:32 p.m. - Astro just commpleted his rendition and after exiting the stage Calypso Reggie is keeping the patrons alive until the second competitor makes his appearance.
    8:40 p.m. - Competitor number two, Socrates has made his way onstage singing 'Holy War'.
    8:47 p.m. - Socrates completes his first song and gets a rousing applause from the audience.
    8:48 p.m. - Master of Ceremonies Calypso Reggie is back onstage keeping the audience lively and has announced that the band that provided musical accompaniment to the two calypsonians who have completed their presentations in the First Round is the Legends Band.
    8:52  p.m. - Queenie G has made her way onstage singing 'Legacy Speaks' and is being backed by the Proud Sound Band.
    SKNVibes apologises for the inconvenience which was due to Internet failure. However, we are back.
    9:03 - Queenie G was unable to complete her song due to a technical failure, but had returned to start all over some four minutes later.
    Between 9:16 and 9:58 p.m., the audience was entertained by Lord Kut singing 'Tribute to Puntan', Richie Buntin with 'Tales of the Dagger', and Big Lice who had a resounding applause singing 'The Decision'.
    10:24 p.m. - Lady Diva is onstage singing 'Cancer Free".
    10:28 p.m. - Lady Diva has just completed her rendition. She was the final calypsonian to take the stage to bring an end to the First Round.
    10:30 p.m. - INTERMISSION. The Legends Band is entertaining the sold-out crowd among whom are the Governor General Sir Edmond Lawrence and Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas.
    10:50: p.m. - INTERMISSION is over and Astro has made his way onstage to commence the Second Round singing "Carnival Therapy'.
    11:00 p.m. - Astro completes his presentation and Calypso Reggie is back in action.
    11:07 p.m. - Socrates onstage belting out one called 'Socro don't have to Sing'.
    11:16 p.m. - To another rousing applause, Socrates has just coompleted his piece which had clips of PM Douglas, Sam Condor, Dwyer Astaphan and people marching in protest.
    11:17 p.m. - Calypso Reggie is back onstage and is indicating to the audience that he would be competing in next year's competition. He is now singing a song which he said brought hin Second Runner-up sometime in the past.
    11:24 p.m. - Queenie G takes the stage singing 'No other Being'.
    11:34 p.m. - Queenie G is offstage and its hilarity time again with Calypso Reggie.
    11:42 p.m. - Lord Kut onstage singing 'The Monk'.
    1:51 p.m. - Lord Kut leaves the stage with many giving him a standing ovation.
    11:52 p.m. - Calypso Reggie is back onstage singing about his past experience with younger juicy women with fat bank accounts.
    11:58 p.m. - Calypso Reggie is bantering with a female patron.
    12 mid-night - Richie is onstage singing 'More Licks Again'. His arrival onstage was met with a mixture of cheers and boos from a very noticeable divided crowd.
    12:06 a.m. - Richie Buntin leaves the stage amidst boos.
    12:14 a.m. - Big Lice is onstage singing a song entitled 'How low can you Go'.
    12:23 a.m. - Once again this calypsonian departs the stage with a rousing applause.
    12:30 a.m. - Rudder is onstage singing 'Save Mother Earth'.
    12:30 a.m. - Rudder has just completed his rendition and Calypso Reggie is back onstage doing his thing and is waiting on the judges' signal for the final competitor to deliver her goods.
    12:16 a.m. - Lady Diva, the final competitor in the Second Round is onstage singing 'Dear Fans'.
    12:52 a.m. - Lady Diva is exiting the stage and many hands are coming together.
    12:53 a.m. - The audience is eagerly awaiting the judges' choice of the 2014/2015 Sugar Mas Senior Calypso Monarch. The criteria: Lyrics 40 points, Music 30 and Performance 30; a grand total of 100 points.
    1:25 a.m. - The judges have completed their task and all the calypsonians an the newly-crowned National Carnival Queen are invited onstage awaiting the arrival of the Chairman of the Carnival Committee to announce the winner and Runners-up.
    1:31 a.m. - Third Runner-up position went to Queenie G with 478 points, Second Runner-up Socrates with 479, Lady Diva was adjudged First Runner-up with 787 points and Astro was crowned King with 802 points.
