Influenza Update # 1 2015

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Martin MD
By: Dr. Patrick Martin MD, Press Release
Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis  --  Residents of St. Kitts and Nevis are asked to note that public health authorities in the USA are reporting a more intense 2014 – 2015 influenza (flu) season in the USA.

The predominant circulating virus in the USA and Canada is Influenza A (H3N2).

The US CDC reports genetic changes in the flu virus occurred after the vaccine strain was chosen.  Hence, in the USA, this year’s flu shot is less effective resulting in more infections and hospitalizations.

Given the level of travel between the St. Kitts and Nevis and North America, health officials and practitioners in the Federation anticipate an increase in influenza-like illnesses starting January.

There is no need for panic.

In normally healthy persons, the flu resolves without complications in about 3-5 days.  Typical symptoms include fever and chills, muscle aches, runny and stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, loss of appetite and fatigue.

Symptoms can be easily managed at home using Paracetamol, fruits, and lots of fluids such as water, homemade juices, soup and teas.

Protection is provided by adequate rest, regular exercise and a plant-based diet.

Effective prevention methods include coughing and sneezing into shirt sleeves or tissue (cover your cough and sneeze), hand-washing with soap and water, and keeping fingers away from nostrils.

Persons with chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease and diabetes, and persons undergoing steroid and cancer treatments, should inform their doctor if they contract a flu-like illness.

In rare cases, a person with the flu may have difficulty breathing.  This is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

A further update will be issued when warranted.
