Tuesday, January 6, 2015 - Rehabilitation work commences today January 6 on the Road Town road networks from the roundabout at the beginning of Walter James Francis Drive and on the end of Water Front Drive near Fort Burt.

This comes as government continues to modernise and improve the Territory’s infrastructure to keep them in line with international standards.

Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool said works will commence from Tuesday, January 6 and will be executed in sections to minimise inconveniences to the public.

He stated, “We know that the Territory has been going through a major transformation, especially when it comes to the infrastructural development.  I am thankful to the public, especially those who live in the East End and Road Town area, for their continued patience as we work tirelessly to improve and upgrade the roads.”

The minister said Road Town is the most heavily traversed area in the Territory and so the decision was made to ensure that road conditions in that area are properly maintained and up to the highest standards.

Minister Vanterpool added that this type of improvement does not happen overnight and that he is happy to live in a country where the people are willing to sacrifice short term discomforts for long term benefits.

He further stated, “With the new heavy equipment Government has purchased, sections of the road that are damaged will be completely cut out and new sub base material and asphalt will be put down to make for a high quality road that will be less prone to potholes in the future.”

Meanwhile, Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Communications and Works Anthony McMaster said that road works will begin on the westward bound lanes of the Walter James Francis Drive from the roundabout at Port Purcell to the traffic light at Wickham’s Cay II junction by the Moorings.  The eastward bound lanes will be used for all traffic in that section of road.

Mr. McMaster said, “Work will begin in the evenings from 6:00 p.m. and will stop at 5:00 a.m. the next morning to allow for an easier flow of traffic.  Motorists are asked to tune in to the local radio stations to be updated on which sections of the road in Road Town that will be affected.”

Motorists are also asked to exercise extreme caution when traversing the area and to follow all traffic signs and directions from workers on site.

Government through the Ministry of Communications and Works remains dedicated to ensuring the continued development and maintenance of the Territory’s public infrastructure and aims to ensure the highest standards.
