Grant: Govt. will call emergency Parliamentary Sitting on boundary changes

Lindsay Grant

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FORMER Leader of the People’s Action Movement Lindsay F. Grant has alleged that following today’s (Jan. 16) meeting of the Constituency Boundaries Commission, the Government would call an emergency Parliamentary sitting in an attempt to change the boundaries in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Grant has also called on his party’s supporters to come out today in their numbers and “do whatever you have to do”.

Grant made those pronouncements, among others, last evening (Jan. 15) at Team Unity’s political meeting in Godwin Ghaut, where he said that, according to his understanding, the Boundaries Commission is slated to meet today at 1:00p.m. with the specific purpose of presenting its final report.

He charges that once the report is presented, it would be forwarded to the Governor General for a proclamation to be prepared.

“When they meet…they are going to meet to present the final boundary report. I want you to listen me carefully. When they present that final boundary report at 1:00, it will then leave there and go to the Governor General who will them send it down to the Prime Minister. It is at that time the Prime Minister can call an emergency Parliament to try and change the boundaries.”

According to the Unity candidate for Constituency Number Four, an attempt is being made to change the boundaries at this stage because the incumbent is unsure of victory at the General Elections under the current boundaries.

“They only want to change the boundaries for one reason. They have come to realise that the people have lost faith with them and the people are just waiting for the bell to be rung and, that as the boundaries are today, Douglas gone een already. And so he feels that his only saving grace is to change the boundaries at the 13th hour. That is what he wants to do to you and I know you will not allow that.”

Grant issued a call to all who “believe in democracy” to do what they have to do to ensure that the boundaries are not changed.

“…you have to tell yourselves as people in the Federation who believe in democracy that tomorrow (Jan. 16) you have to put on your boots and get ready. And so you have to be prepared for anything tomorrow! And so when you hear us make the clarion call tomorrow that we are ready, you must come out in your numbers because the boundaries must not be allowed to be changed tomorrow or any other day. What I’m saying to you is tomorrow or whenever they decide to change the boundaries we have to do what we have to do to make sure that the boundaries don’t change, because let me tell you the reason why they want to change the boundaries…

“We will not allow that and as we up here, do everything in our power legally to make sure that the boundaries don’t change. You have your work to do too, and whatever you have to do you got to do it. I don’t care if they say I inciting tonight! All I tell you, what you have to do you have to do because we have had enough. We have taken enough and the people in the country deserve better, and if you deserve better you deserve a government of unity…”

SKNVibes understands that a meeting of the Boundaries Commission has indeed been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. today at Government Headquarters on Church Street.
