Training sessions for enumerators and field supervisors concluded here on Friday January 16 as the Central Statistics Office in partnership with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) prepares to undertake a Labour Force Survey in the territory.

Training sessions for enumerators were conducted from January 12 -16 and were facilitated by OECS representatives Ms Rachel Jacobs and Ms. Tamika George of the Central Statistics Office in Grenada.

During the training, enumerators were introduced to the concept of economic activity as it relates to the labour force, and they examined the survey questionnaire in detail.  Practice or mock interviews also formed part of the training.

Facilitator Ms.Rachel Jacobs said, “The expected outcome is that enumerators and supervisors (field staff) would have a good understanding of the LFS concepts and definitions and that they would have obtained the necessary skills to conduct field interviews within the data collection phase of the survey.”

Ms Jacobs also stated that it is expected that following the training, the staff of the BVI Central Statistics Office will also build their capacity to conduct future Labour Force Surveys; and that there would be increased collaboration within the OECS region.

The main objective of the Labour Force survey is to divide the working-age population into three mutually exclusive classifications namely, the employed, the unemployed, and those not in the labour force and to provide descriptive and explanatory information on each of these classifications, especially the unemployed.

The survey begins January 19 and will conclude on February 20. It is expected that approximately 700 households will be enumerated across the BVI including some on the sister islands of Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. The month long survey is funded with resources from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), with technical assistance by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The Central Statistics Office is mandated to monitor, research, and report on the performance of the territory’s economy in all important aspects including output, growth, income and employment, interest rates, prices, as well as short-term and long-term structural changes.
