BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALEXANDER DIAZ, the Dominican Republic native who had evaded the police for some four weeks and was captured on Saturday (Jan. 18), was formally arrested and charged with the murder of his fellow national Cesar Pabel Santana who, at the time, was residing in Stoney Grove, Nevis.

Diaz, a resident of Bath Village, Nevis, was also charged with two counts of Wounding.

According to reports reaching SKNVibes, three persons, including Santana, were injured during an incident that occurred at Enrigue Bar in Charlestown, Nevis on Sunday December 21, 2014.

It was learnt that Diaz had allegedly inflicted wounds on all three of them but Santana suffered the worst, as it is said that the blade of the knife with which he was stabbed broke and remained in his back.

He and the others were taken to the Alexandra Hospital, where he was treated and warded in a paralysed state. He was also treated at the JNF Hospital in St. Kitts and had returned to the Alexandra Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries six days after the incident.

On Wednesday (Dec. 24), police had issued a wanted bulletin for Diaz as a person of interest in connection with the incident. However, on Santana’s death, another bulletin was issued, stating that he was wanted for murder.

He however managed to evade the police for approximately four weeks but was captured on Sunday (Jan. 18) while attempting to smuggle out of the country on a fishing boat to St. Maarten, along with two Jamaicans.

A communiqué had informed that the police had discharged several rounds of ammunition during the operation, but they did not receive any report of injuries from the local hospitals.

It also stated that the vessel and its operator(s) had eluded the police but “an active investigation is being carried out to identify and bring to justice the boat owners/operators involved in these types of activities”.

Since then, no word was had from the police concerning the apprehension or non-apprehension of the boat or its operators/owners.

Cesar Pabel Santana was the 23rd person to have been murdered in St. Kitts and Nevis for 2014.
