Sandy Point to be Promoted as Tourist Destination

By: SKINS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 23, 2015 (SKNIS) --  Destination Sandy Point is continuing to make progress with the development of the Cleverly Hill Strip which will see the establishment of 20 booths in the area.

Community Activist Dr. Norgen Wilson stated during the official groundbreaking that the first two booths have already been approved and funded and will be installed soon.

Dr. Wilson stated that this project was a vision of young persons from Sandy Point and himself in an effort to promote Sandy Point and the surrounding areas as a major tourist centre. He mentioned that Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has shown full support of the initiative.

“He immediately grasped the vision once he was briefed about Destination Sandy Point and determined that while it would always retain its community flavour, to reach its full potential it had to be elevated to the level it deserved - the highest priority - as a project that will forever change lives in Sandy Point, Fig Tree, Bouncing Hill, the Farms and Newton Ground project, on a solid foundation of a new economy out of Government's investment in tourism development,” Dr. Wilson stated.

The Prime Minister noted, this new initiative will reap the same positive benefits as past projects.

“The Cleverly Hill Strip will be a key feature of Destination Sandy Point,” Prime Minister Douglas said. “It will do for the budding business people of this area what Reach Out and Touch (a benefit art exhibition) did for the artists of this area as well. Reach Out and Touch caused the entire nation to sit up and take note and so will Destination Sandy Point in general and the Cleverly Hill Strip in particular.”

Destination Sandy Point will consist of two strips, at Cleverly Hill and Pump Bay/Fig Tree, offering local crafts and cuisine; heritage tours and the marketing and sale of local produce, preserves and cottage industry creations in partnership with the local farming community especially shut-ins and the handicapped.

Included in this project as well are, diving tours and a stop off point for yachts at Pump Bay and Sunset Moorings; the positioning of Sandy Point as a major sporting district, offering all sporting facilities and the designation of Sandy Point as the art centre of St. Kitts and Nevis led by the Sandy Point Art Association, (SPARTA).

The community activist stated that these are “a few of the components of the grand scheme that is Destination Sandy Point. Together, their implementation will create a multiplier effect that will see a new energy, new jobs, new services and more money circulating in this community across the board.”
