Church, Chamber break silence; PAM, CCM and PLP leaders still silent

Mr. Calvin Cable
By: Erasmus Williams, Press Release (CUOPM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 26th 2015 (CUOPM) – ZIZ Broadcasting (ZBC) is reporting that some civil organisations have broken their silence, but the CCM/PLP/PAM leaders remain silent on the threats to Nigerian students made by a caller to WINNFM’s Voices programme.

Executive Director of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Calvin Cable told ZIZ News “the Chamber of Industry and Commerce has always supported good order, peace, and stability within the country and we hope that all sides will definitely stick to that agenda to ensure that the continuing progress of the country is maintained.”

Vice Chairman of the St. Kitts Christian Council, Archdeacon Hodge agrees that the churches’ position is to preserve life and decry all forms of violence.

“I think that anyone who’d make a statement of that sort is very unfortunate.  The church obviously condemns those comments so made, if they have been made, and we would wish to have peace and quiet in our Federation and we’re not in the business of sending people home in body-bags whether you come from Nigeria or wherever you come from.  We want to preserve life,” said Archdeacon Hodge.

He urged everyone to be calm and vote for whomever they support without fear.

“And as we’re approaching election mode we want to have an atmosphere of calm and peace so that persons can be very level-headed as they go to vote and vote for someone of their choice,” Rev. Hodge said.

Political leaders of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and the National Integrity Party (NIP) have criticised the comments and WINNFM for allowing the caller, a supporter of Dr. Timothy Harris’ Unity Party, to launch a scathing attack on the Nigerian students.
