BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – JUNIOR MINISTER in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams crossed the Narrows on Sunday evening (Jan. 25) to endorse Team Unity’s candidate for Central Basseterre Jonel Powell on behalf of Premier Vance Amory.

Speaking on Team Unity’s platform on Sunday evening at New Road, Brandy-Williams called on all women present at the meeting to support Powell and all other candidates of the political entity and to go out and win votes for them.

“The women’s votes are critical, they are critical because they outnumber the men and they should go out in their numbers for Powell and Team Unity.  I want you as of tomorrow to team up in twos and help our candidates. They cannot do it on their own! It’s a wide landmark to cover and so we have to help them. Go out there and convince somebody else. We have your support already, but we must have some conversions. You must be able to convince and bring over some more persons.”

She advised Team Unity’s candidates to prepare the women for the task she had given them.

“Candidates, I want you to give our women some talking points. They must be on target and un-script when they go out there. They must be able to tell persons why we are supporting Unity, they must be able to speak from their hearts to say, ‘What the hardships you are feeling at this moment?’ And so as of tomorrow, ladies, you go out there in twos, choose your best buddy and you go and knock on the doors.

“Don’t argue with those who argue, because they will not listen to you. But sit and talk, let them know you don’t come to fight, you come to talk, you come to reason. And so you go out there in confidence that you have a full Unity Team that supports you. You are only doing your part!”

In a passionate entreaty to the women, Brandy-Williams told them that it is their time and requested that Team Unity’s Leader to have three females in his Cabinet when they win the General Elections.

“Women, our time is now, we must take ownership...our time is now! And Prime Minister in-waiting, I am saying to you this evening that the day after Elections, walk down to Church Street. I want to see not one, not two but three women forming part of your Cabinet.”

The Junior Minister highlighted some of the projects the CCM Administration had instituted for senior citizens on Nevis.

“In Nevis we have been rolling out programmes. We have the utilities subsidised programme. And what we are doing? We are paying water and electricity for our seniors, 65 and over, living on their own. That’s a programme we need for our seniors.

“We have just instituted a programme where we are going to the homes of those persons who are house-bound and we are providing them with massage therapy. So those persons who couldn’t walk, they are walking again. Those are the programmes we need for our seniors.”

In a subliminal message, Brandy-Williams said that is what the incumbent Representative for Central Basseterre should be doing for senior citizens in her Constituency and not boast about building public baths.

“Those persons who are little below the average, we build low-income houses for them and certain persons would know of the different low-income houses we have on Nevis. But what I want to say, and I don’t know if it is even a joke, but where in the world you hear about public baths still being built?

“That is a shame to us...an insult to hard-working persons. When you have worked hard you want to know that you can be able to elevate yourselves. You want a little nice house that you can dress-up nice curtains. But you must have indoor facilities – bathroom, running water. Those are basic needs! You don’t have to be a rich person to have that...”

Brandy-Williams lamented that for too long Nevis has been suffering under the Labour Government and Nevisians are saying “no more”, noting that that is the reason why the CCM has aligned itself with Team Unity.

“For the past two years the CCM Government has suffered; they have done us enough. They bounced our cheques! Hard-working civil servants, when they would have worked a full month cannot get they pay. We have and will denounce that...no longer.

“The thing that bothers me is that we asked for one million dollars to bugger and to help us in a difficult period. They went to the House to try to pass and legislate for us to get one million dollars. But in 2013 one million dollars was sent St. Lucia to help the persons in St. Lucia, but cannot be sent to Nevis to help brothers and sisters in Nevis. These are the things why we are aligning ourselves with Unity. They continue to help regional Governments and there is no problem in helping, but passing dem christened pickney first?”

Turning to the Citizenship by Investment Programme, Brandy-Williams said Nevis has not gotten its fair share, and that the Federal Government is currently dragging its feet in the rendering of assistance to proposed projects on the island.

“You are aware of the Citizenship by Investment Programme, and even though we have projects in Nevis for that programme, they must come to St. Kitts for approval. And as I stand here, we have six projects for Nevis in St. Kitts on somebody’s desk from February last year and they have not been signed. And we have our own Patrice Nisbett in the same Cabinet sitting around the same table. And what he does? He grins when his colleagues are putting Nevis under undue stress and pressure, all he does is just grin. What kind of Nevisian is that? And so we are saying that when Unity comes into power we would like our projects signed within 21 days.”

She is of the view that Nevis would be catapulted to success should the projects get underway, but accuses Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas of wanting to see the island fail in its endeavours.

“If we are to get these projects up and running Nevis will be on upward trajectory. And that is what we want. As Nevisians we are self-sufficient, we are resilient, we are proud people and we want to go back to being proud. But for some reason the Prime Minister wants to break us down, wants to breakdown our pride. But it will not happen because 21 days after Team Unity gets into office all projects will be signed.

“We are asking for a fair share, we are not asking for half, we are just asking for our fair share. Every time we send a project down to SIDF we have been turned down. Why? The passports that are being sold are the responsibility of St. Kitts and Nevis; they are the ownership of St. Kitts and Nevis...”

Hazel Brandy-Williams reiterated that the people in Central Basseterre should support Jonel Powell and the other candidates of Team Unity, noting that “your vote is critical and this is a crucial election, we must win it.
