16th February is Polling Day

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – COME February 16, the electorate of St. Christopher and Nevis would be heading to the polls to elect individuals who would be charged with governing the affairs of the country for the next five years.

After much anticipation, it was expected that Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas would have made the announcement this evening (Jan. 27) at his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s (SKNLP) political meeting to be held in Constituency Number Three.

However, his Press Secretary issued a press release this afternoon informing of the Polling Day date and also indicated that Nomination Day is slated for February 6, 2015.

The release was issued shortly after the Prime Minister had made an address to the Nation indicating that the Governor General had, today, issued writs of Election.

Today, the 27th day of January 2015, the Governor-General for the purpose of the holding of the seventh General Elections has issued the relevant writs of connections under the Public Seal addressed to the Returning Officers of all of the Constituencies.

“By the same writs, it is ordered that the dates set for the nomination of candidates for each Constituency shall be named later tonight by me, the Prime Minister, in a public meeting that will take place at Buckley’s. And we shall make at that public meeting in Buckley’s also the date for the country’s next Elections, just a little beyond five years of the last Elections of 25th of January 2010.

And that address was reportedly aired shortly after the High Court of Justice had discharged an injunction imposed on January 16, 2015 to prevent the use of the final report of the Constituency Boundaries Commission for the purpose of preparing a proclamation.

Both the SKNLP/Nevis Reformation Party coalition and the Team Unity, which comprises of the Concerned Citizens Movement, the People’s Action Movement and the People’s Labour Party have indicated that there are prepared to head to the polls and are confident of victory.
