RLBIA Continues to Be Shaped Into A World-Class Facility

Departure area RLBIA
By: SCASPA, Press Release

BIRD ROCK, ST. KITTS – January 29, 2015 (SCASPA)  --  A ceremony was held yesterday, Wednesday, January 28, 2015 to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated and expanded departure lounge of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (RLBIA). The renovation of the lounge included the removal of the VIP departure lounge, the addition of one hundred additional seats and replacement of seating furniture, flooring, restrooms, checkout counters and lighting fixtures to LED lighting.

Present at the ceremony were Minister with responsibility for SCASPA, Honourable Richard Skerritt, Chairman of SCASPA’s Board of Directors, Mr. Carol Evelyn, Chief Executive Officer of SCASPA, Mr. Jonathan Bass, Project Manager, Mr. Eurick Dorset, Ministry of Tourism and International trade officials, tenants of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, SCASPA management team and staff members.

Chief Executive Officer of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) in brief remarks stated that “with the increase in air traffic and passenger arrival at the RLBIA, SCASPA recognized the need to expand the arrival and departure halls to address the congestion and give the passengers a better experience. In January 2013, we completed the renovation and expansion of the arrival hall at RLBIA at a cost of 410,000 US. We are pleased today to showcase the expansion and upgrade of our departure lounge. This work started five months ago. The overall cost for this project is $725,000 US of which we received a grant of $300,000 US from the Taiwanese Embassy. We are grateful for the partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of China on Taiwan.”

In his address, Minister with responsibility for SCASPA, Honourable Richard Skerritt emphasised that launching the upscale lounge is an important milestone for SCASPA and the island.

"I’m happy to say that the leadership of SCASPA with the Ministry has achieved remarkable things in the past 5 years that I have been involved. As simple as this ceremony is, it is symbolic of bigger things; including the solar farm, redo of the airport runway lights, other significant projects at the cargo pier including the breasting dolphin and customer oriented projects at the arrivals hall at Port Zante. This ongoing phased renovation at the airport shows customers that we are serious about their experience, meeting global standards and running one of the smaller but one of the best airport operations in the Caribbean.”

Minister Skerritt highlighted that feedback received from customers proved that SCASPA, the Ministry and the island of St. Kitts ‘get’ what is it takes to meet the demands of travellers.

“The feedback from the customers tells us that we are on the right path and moving in the right direction. Every passenger that passes through this airport must be given the highest attention and personalized service. We understand that that is how we will compete, survive and bring prosperity to our people. SCASPA gets it. St. Kitts and Nevis Tourism gets it. This government gets it. We just have to make sure that every day we implement it.”

The ceremony ended with a walkthrough of the airport led by Project Manager, Mr. Eurick Dorset showcasing the upgraded changes that have been made to modernize the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, making it a world-class facility.
