Molyneux, St.Kitts (TUCOM-January 29th) -- The innovative and bold Team UNITY National Health insurance Plan will be commissioned within the first 90 Days of a Team UNITY Government.
The commissioning and implementation of the Team UNITY National Health Insurance Initiative will be spearheaded by Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8 Hon. Eugene Hamilton who developed the plan.
In 1992 St. Kitts Nevis was one of the earliest Eastern Caribbean nations to embrace Universal Health coverage for Public Servants. The revolutionary Health Insurance Scheme was designed by Hon. Hamilton. The plan provided coverage for local care and extended coverage for procedures at regional and extra regional providers, including major medical coverage. Every public servant from the Governor General to the lowest paid employee on the government’s payroll was included.
The Team UNITY National Health Insurance Plan will have similar coverage but for ALL residents . MP Hamilton’s plan will see a partnership developed between the private and public sectors so that all of our citizens including children, the unemployed, and persons with pre-existing conditions would be covered in the event that they become ill and incur major expenses for treatment at home or abroad.
The Team UNITY government will work with Social Security, employers and trade unions to work out the best mechanism for the operation of the scheme and the payment of premiums via payroll contributions.
Under the plan all persons registered under the Social Security Act will have access to national health insurance benefits, including self-employed persons. Children including Pre-Schoolers will be included.
The intention of this Health Insurance Scheme is to ensure that every resident has access to a reasonable measure of protection if faced with a medical need.
The Team UNITY National Health Insurance Policy is one of a plethora of policies that will be pursued under their “Prosperity for All “ Agenda. Other pillar policies of the Prosperity Agenda include the removal of VAT from Food, Medicine, Educational Supplies and Funeral Expenses. Universal Pre-School Education, Reduction on Low Income House Mortgages and Student Loan Payments, plus the availability of 1000 house lots following the repeal of the Lands Act which saw over 1200 acres of land being handed over to National Bank in order to cover wanton debts accrued by the Denzil Douglas led administration.
